So I'm thinking about swapping out the stock speaker and I think I have narrowed it down to two speakers. The eminence c.Rex and legend 1218. I play an alternative blend with blues influence. I'm looking for more punch in the low end and less harsh highs does anyone have experience with these speakers or other suggestions?

I like the Eminence speakers. I have Rajin Cajuns in my ProJrs and get
an equal low, mids and high range with single coils and a more pronounced
low end with P-90s.

Good luck!

I have heard many good things about the C. Rex, and I like Eminences (they're what are in my 63 Reissue Vibroverb; not the C. Rex, but another type of Eminence).

I have also heard good things about the Kendrick Black Gold speakers, although only in relation to a vintage (or reissue) Fender amp (like the Super Reverb or Vibroverb), not in relation to the Blues Jr. You might check those out as well.

BTW, thank you for starting a normal thread...it's a relief. :)

Have you tried the celestion G12H speaker? Have one in my BJR and its sounds great.

I have a Celestion G-12-H-75 in my JCM 800 4210 and it's an absolutely incredible speaker, albeit pricey,I wish I had the scratch to buy 8 to put in the cabs of my stack. However as soon as I get done with a couple of more gear priorities I'm putting a Vintage 30 in my Blues Jr. from what I've heard they make the most profound improvement in the amps.

Agree, they are amazing! When I struck the first chord after I changed the original speaker to the G12H, it was like I liftet a damp cloth from the front panel of the amp! I can guarantee you won't be disappointed :)

As guitslinger is contemplating, I did put a Celestion V30 in my (new at the time) BJ mk2.

The improvement was dramatic. Most of the harshness goes away and your EQ controls start working properly. It saved the amp for me basically - prior to that it was destined for the quickest resale ever!

I may be wrong, but I have heard that the v30s have a thinner bottom end and more jangle? I find myself with my treble on about three mid about 6 and bass maxed. Has anyone tried the v30 next to the c.Rex?

BTW thank you for the replies

I would say that's a little bit right. I like a fair bit of low end myself. I did a comparison of 2 of my cabs years ago. One was a Mesa with V30s, the other a B-52 AT-412. The B-52 surprisingly was a better sound. It handled the low end much better, and was a more colorful all around sound. The Mesa even had a better constructed cabinet. The difference in price between the two is quite a bit. Not worth justifying the Mesa costing so much if you ask me.

I still use the B-52 12at speakers in my combos to this day. The V30s are around for backups. In my combos, the V30s tend to honk and fart if I use too much low end. The B-52's can handle anything I throw at them without breaking a sweat.

Too bad I don't live in Torrance, Ca.. I'd be all over this:

That's the same kind of cab I bought for $120 years ago. Very underestimated in my opinion.

It may be worthwhile exploring the web for demos of the Blues Junior "Texas Red". This is the standard mk2 Blues Junior (not the latest model) - finished in red tolex - but more significantly for you, has a Celestion V30 as standard. That will give you some idea of what to expect from fitting a V30.

Here's a demo to get you started:

So speaker swap went well(this was my first on a tube amp) and WOW that little blues Jr sounds monstrous. It wasn't as noticeable when first installed but after some break in it really delivers. I used to have my bass on ten and my treble on 3 just to try to tame the shrillness but it would then sound flabby, now with the bass on five and the treble all the way to nine this thing will just sing and has a bigger punch in the low end. I also found that it made the overdrive so much smoother I now have the volume set at 9 instead of 6 just for that perfect brink of break (ay7 tube in v1 that's why its not half the number).

Anyway I cannot recommend this speaker enough. Now I know what everyone was talking about with the poor stock speaker

I have to hold off for now, but this thread makes me that much more excited to swap the speaker in my Pro Jr.
