Hi Harry and welcome, as most of the previous replies have been good I'll just add my $.02 cents worth. Don't get frustrated... once the callouses develop you'll end up playing for hours at a time, in fact you'll find as your co-ordination and familiarity with the fretboard increases it gets easier and way more fun. John Fogarty is a good place to start learning as far as songs and style goes and once you find yourself feeling comfortable enough to jam with other people you'll probably find that 9 times out of 10 somebody will know a Creedence song to jam on...that's when the real fun starts, I think you'll find there is an unspoken/unwritten bond that develops between people that jam together often (oh yeah and don't get put off by the overly egotistical "I'm the Greatest " attitude that your bound to run into somewhere along the line, just smile and nod and know that there is no such animal in the world of music, it ain't a competion it's a conversation) any way 'nuff said...keep us up on your progress and don't be to shy to ask for any help....( there aren't any dumb questions)

Hey Dharma47,

Thank you and I think what you said is absolutely right and will look forward to getting to the point that I can play with other musicians. And as you said, who wouldn't know at least one song by CCR!

I also appreciate your statement of "oh yeah and don't get put off by the overly egotistical"... Yah especially when its sooooo obvious I’m the best… Hey it isn't easy being a sex symbol! 8)

BTW, what is a "Hot Lick"? I remember reading something about, if you’re going to play Rock as a lead guitarist you need to learn “Hot Licks”?

Thanks again,

Harry

Hi Harry, and welcome aboard. I started playing back in the 70's and got away from it in the mid 80's(joined the service)When I started playing again after I got married I couldn't belive how much I forgot. I strugled with playing again for years untill I found tabs, then one day I checked out a DVD set "Learn and Master The Guitar" Now it's getting better still for me because it has made me lose my bad habits. Its a little pricy at around $150 but I felt it was a good move on my part. Good luck, and enjoy the music.

Hello again,

I've gone back through the posts regarding TAB's and although everyone is in agreement that I should learn them, no one told me what they are? I've come up with a couple on my own, but they have nothing to do with playing the guitar!

Its a secret society right? I just want to play the guitar, I don't want to be involved in anything that requires a ritual chanting or running outside in the nude yelling "I like Elvis, I like Elvis"! :) I promised my wife I'd stop doing that...

Tab is short for tablature. It is a different way to write and read music. Basically the lines are the strings. The number on the line or lines is the fret to be played. Most tablature books will have the explanation of what the other marks mean such as hammer-ons, pull-offs, slide, verbrato, ect...

Ah yes, now I get it. When I did a search I should have written "guitar Tabs". What about Hot licks, thats my last point to ponder.

Thanks for your help,

Harry
