It's all in the mids. Scooped mid metal just sounds weak.
More mids than gain with singlecoils is metal heaven. Punch like Tyson

He kills it. I was not a big MM fan until seeing him live. Great use of trem, and playing tasteful solos. He is quite under-rated, really.

Been a Mick fan since Shout at the Devil. He didn't start using Fender Strats full time until after the Dr. Feelgood album. Not sure what name brand the pedal steels were. Mick has a big blues background, guess that's why he was judging at GC's KOTB last year.

Here's his guitars of choice according to Wikipedia:

Guitars
Gibson Les Paul Customs for Too Fast For Love Shows 1981-1983.
Gibson Les Paul Custom, B.C. Rich Warlock, Hamer Blitz, Gibson Flying V and Guild Flying Star during the Shout At The Devil tour 1983-1984.
Kramer Explorers, Kramer Barettas and Kramer Pacers during the Theatre Of Pain tour 1985-1986.
Kramer Custom Shop Telecasters during the Girls Girls Girls tour 1987-1988.
Kramer Custom Shop "mirror top" Telecasters and a variety of Barettas and custom shop Kramers during the Dr. Feelgood tour 1989-1990. (Fender Stratocaster in Don't Go Away Mad video.)
Fender Stratocasters and Telecaster, Gibson Les Pauls, Charvel Super Strat and Paul Reed Smiths during the Decade of Decadance Shows 1991 - 1993.
Fender Stratocasters and A Jackson Soloist during the Mötley Crüe tour 1994-1995.
Gibson Les Pauls (Sometimes with Floyd Rose bridges), Gibson Chet Atkins SST 12-String and Fender Stratocasters as main stage guitars for Generation Swine shows 1996-1997, Greatest Hits support shows 1998-1999, New Tattoo tour 2000-2001, Carnival of Sins Tour/Route of all Evil Tour 2005-2006.

For the two weeks he was in the band.

Yes, but he was there long enough to perform with them on the Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus...

...and I can't, under any circumstances, call them heavy metal. The only connection between Tull and metal--and a tenuous one at that--is the medieval imagery some metal bands embrace.

When I was a kid, I remember reading articles that said how bad of a guitarist Mars was, and I never understood why they said it. I didn't play at the time so I had a different perspective than I have now. His tone is NASTY and the stuff he plays isn't easy to play, even though a lot of it is just sped up blues.

This is about the only connection between Jethro Tull and metal that I can think of:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hebZV0l0Lng

It's a cover of "Cross Eyed Mary" by Iron Maiden. It's definitely different from Maiden's original stuff but they still manage to make it sound heavy.
