A local hunter shot a coyote on the weekend that turned out to tip the scales at 82 lbs. The previous world record holder was killed some years ago in Wyoming if memory serves me correctly and it weighed in at 76 lbs.We didn't have a single coyote on the island part of the province until about 15 years ago when a few came across from the mainland on the sea ice and the last Newfoundland wolf was killed in 1928 and that's part of the reason that the moose population has exploded. It is believed that since this animal is so huge it may very well be a wolf/coyote hybrid, which could be dangerous to humans as a coyote will attack a human but there has never been a documented wolf attack on a human in North America. Last summer a young Canadian songstress was killed by 3 coyotes in a Nova Scotia park. They are very dangerous both as purebred coyotes and as hybrids because they don't have the inate fear of humans that purebred wolves have. You can check out this story here: http://www.cbc.ca/nl/

Wolves fatally attacked a teacher in Alaska in 2010, and in 2006 a geology student was killed by wolves in Saskatchewan. http://articles.latimes.com/2010/mar/13/nation/la-na-wolf-attack13-2010mar13 Those are the first documented wolf attack fatalities in North America ever, but there are scores of well documented non-fatal wolf attacks in NA over the centuries.

Of course, that just makes a wolf-coyote hybrid even scarier.

I have taken a few Coyotes in Maryland,. They have been documented here since the early 70's and have current population Yr.growth rates of over 25% and are considered invasive predators. I did sell the hides from them so I didn't just shoot them for the heck of it.

Hi Strayedstrater, thanks for that info,I got mine from what I thought was a relaible source either Canadian Geographic,CPAWS or The Canadian Wildlife Federation, that's very strange. Was it definitely purebred wolves and not the hybrid species? The reason I ask this is because wolves usually go out of their way to avoid any human contact whatsoever unless they have rabies or something.I'm not for a second doubting what you are saying because I have seen instances many times before where what are usually very reliable sources at odds with completely opposite statements.I'll have to dig through my back issues and see which one printed that info,I think that maybe it's the Canadian Geographic issue with a pair of wolves on the cover from last year or the year before.
