These days its easy to acquire many guitars without going broke or in debt with eBay and the number of quality guitars out there in the $200-$400 price range. In the past 2 years I have bought 6 guitars, all but one of them new, for a total of $1200 or less. At times I do feel like a neglectful parent because I don't play with them all equally since I have my favorites. I say if you can and want to buy it without your or your family starving or going into debt, then by all means do it.

Of course the bottom line is, it doesn't matter how many guitars you have or how expensive your guitar was, because if you can't play, no ones gonna pay attention to your guitar or guitars...

That's a very good point.

Personally, I feel that if you have the means to get 'em then GET 'em by ALL means! But if you're like me, (living and surviving on an "anorexic" shoestring budget!...LoL!) then you just hold onto the battle-worn Squier that you have, and keep the FMR head you have in working condition until you either:
1 - Hit the lottery
2 - Marry a famous/rich girlfriend, who's willing to support your "habit"!
3 - Find some form of space-age material that the gov't is willing to pay you BILLIONS for, then you buy the dang company!...Lol!

But it doesn't matter how many instruments you have, it doesn't matter how many notes you can play within a 444th half beat, all that matters is what comes from inside your head, and what flows forth from your hands,...if it's full of "real-ness" then that will transfer to your audience, wether it's your H.S. classmates, your parents, the entire neighborhood, your goldfish, your Chia pet....etc..etc....

"Castles Made Of Sand".....

No,....I've been playing since I was about 15...(I'm 37 now!) and I learned to "play by ear" I wouldn't know a "D chord from an "F" chord!....But I can remember when I first started playing how everyone was into the "Yngwie" thing....(spandex and all....LoL!)

I own 2 guitars (1967 Fender Jaguar, 1958 Gibson ES-175D), but I didn't actually buy either. They both belonged to my grandfather. In a month or so I will be purchasing my first guitar. It probably won't be my last. I want to get a fat strat now, but I'm thinking about getting a classic series '72 telecaster some day. Hope to buy a bass soon too. Probably a 5 string jazz bass, but I'm not sure.

I have in total 3 guitars (Squier Standard Strat, Fender Standard Strat-Left Handed, Squier Standard Telecaster) I also plan on getting a few more before I'm "done". I still want a jazz guitar, (I'm thinking maybe an Epiphone or a Peavey, but Washburn has recently caught my eye, and they're inexpensive so I'll see!) I also want a "dual humbucker" guitar but NOT a Les Paul...I see Ibanez has a few that look like they could get the job done. Then I want to get a Fender Jaguar, and finally a good acoustic, and I'll be "complete"!...LoL!

If you're like me you're never satisfied. You always want more. It's like an addiction. LOL I told my wife that I was going to buy a new guitar and she was like "you don't need a new guitar, you've got a perfectly good guitar". I tried to explain to her that you get different sounds and such from different types of guitars. She's finally agreed to let me get a new guitar, but she gave me *gasp* a spending limit. :(

Some guitar players get by with 1 or 2 guitars, while others just seem to acquire instruments that take them in a new direction. There is no such thing as the do all guitar; like paint brushes to a painter.
If one has the realistic ability to own and play several guitars, more power to them. Common sense would dictate that if you are of limited means and/or ability, choose your guitar(s) carefully.

I personally have 12 guitars but I am broke. LOL Every time I get the chance I am putting money into my current guitars or buying a new one. It is an expensive addiction.

I've decided what's best for me is to have different guitars for different sounds. Having a Strat, Jazzmaster, Les Paul, SG , an acoustic & a 12-string electric get the job done for me. Except of course I still need a Tele.

All in all, I agree this is definitely an addiction....thank God it's not one that's life threatening, I'm probably not "done" when it comes to buying guitars but after I get the ones that I want, for different sounds, textures, etc. I'll probably go the "custom" route....like a custom PRS...or maybe a Carvin, since they can give you EXACTLY what you want, (but seriously, why kick out all that money...when everything I want lives in either a Strat or Tele!??) so I'm on the fence about it, I'm also in the market for a new amp,.....but I can't do the "tube" thing anymore....it's too much to afford....with the biasing, the tube matching, the replacements etc......not to mention the cost of a brand new tube amp.....so I'm looking for a great sounding "solid state" amp that can give me a nice, round, but fuzzy, strong and hearty classic rock sound, but will also give me that solid, muscular, blues sound too....any suggestions?....

Yeah, I've got a suggestion. Rethink your solid state idea! LOL. Come on man, tube amps aren't that much trouble. Put in a matched set of tubes and your good for years. You can find a used Peavey Classic 30 for about $350. Small, not too heavy.More tone then you'll ever find in a SS amp.
