Perhaps some better examples are in order. Hows this for a start?

All (with the exception of the blonde with the Les Paul and the final video) were good-to-great technical players (and she wasn't absolutely terrible, just not that great).

The only one that showed a modicum of soul was the girl who played bass on Sade's "Smooth Operator", and she seemed to have the cool, disaffected thing going on (but that may just be my impressions of the song being reflected onto her as a player)...loves me some Sade!!

All (except the last one :? ) were attractive young ladies in varying degrees, but what does that have to do with playing guitar?

The player in last video needs to have a crew of spelunkers go exploring in their belly button--they might find Jimmie Hoffa and Amelia Earhart playing cards in there...

Some are OK some aren't. Most have no emotion, no expression, no sense of rhythm & not entertaining at all. There like wind up toys or maybe, put a dime in and away they go. Then time's up & hit the stop button.

Like trained monkeys, except for lady smooth operator. No tone, no emotions, no timing, nothing.

Cheers

David

The kids here are excellent players. But I was partial to the redneck. He was more relaxed. Maybe because he is 45 and s-faced. :P

Errrrm yeah! they've obviously put a lot of practice time in and achieved nimble playing techniques with equipment that helps that along but it doesn't really seem go anywhere.
As with all of this type of constant shredding, these players seem to have the impression it's all about firing notes off in aimless scale progressions, oblivious to anything relative going on, behind and around it.
Ok.. it sounds fast and skillful to any listening non guitarist and non musician....but even to them it has to sound like much of a muchness after 30 seconds or so because the brain catches up with it and all impact is lost and it disappears down a cold black hole somewhere.
To me, apart from the last guy, they sound and look like bored kids. They need to be playing with a band, were they can learn to musically interact... ease back and learn dynamics..that 'less is more thing' ..loud and soft, slow and fast, light and shade and at times nothing at all. Punch hard at the right times in short bursts, not too much. Make music interesting and errrrm.....fun!

Juliette is good. She can join my band.

Actually, I'll start a new band just for her to join...

Cheers - C

Thanks. Ok, serious question: what do you mean by "equipment that helps that along." I've never touched one, but do these ugly "shredder" guitars have super duper low action and they put 7s on them or something like that?

Distortion units for one and yes! very low action that put together makes the guitar very touch sensitive.
If you look at the first one......I think it's the first..one of them anyway is playing a tremelo action with the right hand on the open fifth string. In other words firing notes off,
then with say, the third finger of the left hand you go up and down the fretboard touching notes at anything, perhaps the 2nd, 3rd 5th, 7th and back, 5th, 3rd 2nd frets.
Do that fast and it will sound a bit impressive to a non guitar listener. And switch strings as well, move up to the 4th string, drop to the 6th keeping the same pattern going, next add extra frets in your sequence and mix the pattern around a little and then go the hell as fast as you can and in no time at all, you're sounding like a shredder and you're left hand hardly moves, the hardest work in shredding is done with the right hand.
