Hi there the last few months i have tryed to pull out my boss super chorus and i just cant stand it anymore because it makes a horrible noise when turned off and the noise just hightens when turned on, you cant hear the noise if you play but when i turn that guitar down it just gives a high pitched "wahwahwahwahwahwah".

I run the guitar with a zakk wylde over drive and that is when the noise peaks the most out of the Super chorus pedal, when running on its own its just a tad less loud. I have played with the settings on the pedal they all seem fairly low, i have a feeling it might have something to do with my powersupply. i have a power supply thats meant to fit a pedal but i bought an attachment which has a female plug to connect to and that sprouts out into 7 power connections for 7 pedals, i only use 2 though. do you think it could be this cheap Generic power supply?

cheers guys any advice would be great

Ok, I'll try:

It could be a problem with your "cheap" power supply. Remove it from your rig, put some batteries in your effects and see if the problem goes away.

Another issue can be the patch cables...bad patch cables cause more noise than any other single thing in a long effects chain (although it sounds like you have a rather simple rig).

Another simple issue can be just the chorus pedal going bad.

Now, if any of those tricks don't work:

Any "noise" (I'm assuming you mean 60 cycle hum) you hear from a pedal is bound to get worse with overdrive or distortion after it in the signal chain.

Also, with any modulation effect (chorus, phase shifter, flanger, wah, Leslie simulator, etc.), there are certain frequencies that don't work well with certain overdrive or distortion settings.

It can:
(1) Create a phase-canceling-like effect, which will make your tone and/or volume get very weak or thin...or...
(2) Make a horrible racket that goes from just plain noisy all the way to cheese-grater-on-the-temporal-lobe.

I don't know where your Zakk Wylde overdrive pedal (an MXR, I'm assuming) is in your signal chain (before or after the chorus), but if it's after the chorus, it's going to emphasize any stray 60 cycle artifact that is caused by your Boss.

Also, if your ZW pedal is after the chorus, you're more likely to get the odd clashing frequency problems I mentioned...
(1) try lowering the distortion/overdrive settings...or...
(2) lower the effect level,  depth or frequency settings on the chorus.

These problems are common enough that MXR makes a vintage-sounding fuzz pedal with a "buffer" switch so this problem doesn't pop up with (specifically) the use of a wah or other modulation effect.

Also, if you're using the MXR Wylde Overdrive, that pedal has the tendency to be a bit noisy on it's own (not meant to be an insult--that's a great-sounding pedal), so the combo of all these factors plus a slightly noisy overdrive could be the problem.

You could also try putting the MXR ZW OD before the Chorus, but it will change the way your rig sounds...

You might also invest in a noise gate pedal--I use the Rocktron HUSH pedal, and used to use an ISP Decimator G-String (it did not agree with harp microphones, though)...

Thankyou for your advice mate! Its a great help!

The zak wyle pedal is the mxr and yeah shes a bit noisy even on her own, to be honest I got it on special for $50, I use it before and after the chorus whichever way really. Ill have a play around with the methods you saidand try figure it out cheers!

The noise gate pedal you speak of, is this similar to like the noise suppressor pedals? Do theses really cut out awful sounds and feedback etc?

I am thinking of building a pedal board and getting some new toys , is there any methods to take into account when building one? (not with the making of box I got that covered, just linking up all pedals, decent power supply etc. I wanna get a flanger, wah pedal, digital delay possibly a few other gizmos do I have to put them in a certain order when hooking them all up?
