...you could spend over $1000 on a single snare drum. Just putz'n around on GC.com and see that they have 4 snares over a grand, and another couple dozen from $500-900.

Now, I suppose drummers get GAS just as bad as guitarists, but holy smokes. Then the question is the same one we often discuss on guitar sites which is "does the difference in price really make that much difference in tone" etc etc. And I guess drummers have as much trouble 'splainin to their wives why they need a thousand dollar drum as we do with ours when we NEED another guitar, or amp, or...

Sorry if this is all just mindless rambling, but a grand for a snare really surprised me. Any drummers here?

i'm sure drummers walk by limited run custom shop models that are well over $10,000 and say "is a piece of wood and strings worth that much?! i'm not a drummer, but i suppose its all about the manufacturing process and brand and such.. maybe its worth a thousand, maybe not, but i'm sure there are plenty out there who will buy them

A drummer I had in a band once had 7 different drum sets. Amazingly, his wife was completely understanding.

He would take various sets to different shows, just to be completely random, and if you asked him why he had each one, much like a guitarist, he would go into how this is made of this and that, and how the tone is better for blah blah. It was quite impressive walking into his "drum room" and seeing drums stacked on top of drums along all the walls.

Not quite sure how much he spent on all of it though.

I'm not a drummer, but if I HAD to choose a kit, it'd be the Ludwig 'Ringo' Black Oyster kit. For sentimental reasons. Trying to find one like Keith Moon's would be difficult, as he wrecked them fairly often.

Martin can shove that uke where the sun don't shine, it's definetly not worth that.

I see Martin like I see Gibson, overpriced. Both of their stuff sounds good, but their just too damn high. I could actually see paying Gibsons prices before I could pay Martins.

Martins are too drab looking for the money and frankly they sound no better than Gibsons fancy stuff. I'll take a mortgage out for a fancy good sounding Gibson, but not for a good sounding drab looking Martin, haha.

I've never really been a Martin fan, I've never even owned one which suprised even me. They sound great but drab was a good description. For quaity vs. dollar I still say an old Guild is every bit the match of a Gibson or Martin for a whole lot less.

As a drummer I feel it is my duty to shed some light on this situation. Yes there is a difference in tonal quality that comes with better drum building. It's all about how many plys of what wood and how the bearing edges are cut. Like I prefer birch wood over maple cause I like that certain tone. I do not, however, think any one drum is worth 1K. Just my opinion on that. I once priced my "dream kit" on DW's web site and it was well over 15K and it was just a 5 piece kit with all the hardware I would need. Drums and guitars are similar in one respect. If you want the best you're gonna pay out the nose to get it...LOL :D

There's often a top end to most products. A bud came from the consumer electronics show and showed a brochure for $400-each KNOBS for your electronics.

Nice knobs, but $400 each? Makes a pricey snare drum a bit more understandable.

I don't know crap about drums. But I know when it comes to all instruments you can get better tone by the quality of them. I was always under the impression that if drummers wanted a better drum sound (or bigger sound), they just added drums to the ones they already had, resulting in the drummer being completely hidden behind drums that would look like a New York city skyline or something, haha.

What are you kidding, i do agree a 5000 dollar uke is too much, but to say martin is too high???? I mean they are the best sounding acoustic guitars ever!!!! There are some that come close but there aint nothing like an old d 45 or d 28 or d 35 which is what i play!! I have a early 70's d41, and it is my all time avorite acoustic, floors me every time i pic it up!!!! Martin ix my acoutic just like Fender is my Electric!!!!
