The first time I met Bugs Henderson was at a guitar show in Dallas. I was looking at a red Les Paul that I couldn't afford and I heard a voice behind me say, "That sure is pretty, are you gonna buy it?"

I turned around and said, "No, do you want to...hey, you're Bugs Henderson!"

He laughed and said, "Yeah, I know...somebody else told me that earlier."

"I'm sorry, that was a stupid thing to say, I meant, I have a couple of your albums and I really like your playing..."

"Well thank you...I appreciate that. Now, are you going to buy that guitar?"

He was gracious and humble and just as goofy about guitars as any other guy (really eager to get his hands on that Paul)...

The first time I saw him (at J&J's Blues Bar in Fort Worth) he didn't put on a great show...I was disappointed, because his albums were great (I had a few, including one live disc recorded in Austin)...two days later, he had a heart attack in or near Waco, so that subpar performance was probably related to the fact that he felt like crap.

I saw him again a year later and he was spectacular. Overall, I got to see him play about six times, both with the Shuffle Kings and with Mouse & The Traps (his old teenage/high school band).

I loved his "Every Surf Instrumental Ever Written In Five Minutes" performance...he would start with the opening of "Walk, Don't Run" and the play the signature riff of a Ventures, Dick Dale, etc., song at breakneck speed and then switch effortlessly to the next song--chord changes, pace differences and melody changes fully intact--until he had played about thirty or forty clips from songs and then finish with the end of "Walk, Don't Run"...hilarious and jaw-dropping, even for the non-musicians who didn't realize how tough it would have been to pull it off so seamlessly.

I met him two or three other times (besides my embarrassing gaffe at the guitar show) and he was always very friendly and gracious. Funny, too.

RIP, blues-rocker-psychedelic-country-surfer-Texas man. You will be missed...
