So today, during the morning, I was playing my blues really loud. I didn't notice it, but the whole neighbourhood could listen to me. Of course that resulted in someone calling the cops to complain about the "noise" as it was 10 am in a Saturday. I stopped playing for a while then saw the cops arrive. As they didn't know which apartment the music was coming from, they just stood in the parking lot searching for me, but couldn't find me. I was really freightened for a while, then I started writing a blues song about it. Luckily, I'm not in jail. :P

So, have you guys had any problems with loud music and the neighbours?

In my younger days, constantly. The cops I must say, were always good about it. But then again, we're talking NY City here.

Yes, my neighbor, up the hill behind me, likes to blast marching band music on Sunday mornings. Seriously! I think it's his funny way of waking up his family, but he has a huge system and saturates the whole neighborhood, which is normally pretty quiet. I'm surprised no one else has called the police. I plot revenge, but haven't carried anything out yet.

Dude, it's time to move! If you can't listen to your blues at 10am on a Saturday than you are in the wrong place!
On another note, you might wanna check out your lease and see if it refers to loud noise or music. Most mention "quiet hours" but then your free to do what you want other times.

See, you've got the right idea! plan on blasting them out sometime, not call the police over some loud music. You only do that if the neighbor is a dirtbag crack head that slams the door when you ask them to turn it down.

I know, man! I don't think Portugal is very fond of the blues, so I need to go to USA!
I need to check how long is the quiet hours period. I know when it starts at 10pm, so I always turn my volume down when I it's 10pm.

ah..your not in the U.S. . most cities in the U.S. have a noise ordinance that usually says no loud noise between 11:00pm and 7:00am. no loud music, loud cars, bikes and so on. but i live in a rural area where neighbors are at some distance so noise really is not a problem. oh yeh, cops like loud music too.

In some areas, the police don't handle loud noise issues. You may have to call a Code Enforcement Department for loud noise complaints.

Code Enforcement Department, just keepin' the white man down.

If I may play the devil's advocate for a minute: Apartment living is far far different than living in a single family home. You may have someone who works all night shifts in the apartment adjoining yours,or a parent who was up all night tending to a coliccy baby, someone who is prone to migraines or even worse someone who's termanilly ill. Out of respect for the rights of others to some peace and quiet, playing loud music in an appartment building shows little respect and concern for others.Don't get me wrong,I love to turn up a the amps and kick out the jams every now and then but when I was living in an apartment I didn't turn my amps up much louder than the radio. It wouldn't hurt you to use headphones or keep your guitar at a level that wouldn't annoy others,if not some burly nightshift worker may knock down your door and give you a guitar suppository.

Many are more strict then that, Baltimore County states Quote{ A person may not create domestic noise or allow domestic noise to be created that unreasonably disturbs the peace, quiet, and comfort of the neighboring inhabitants. ) There are are time restraints to when you can get sited for this. It can be written as a Criminal or Civil violation with a fine of $500 also a landlord can be given the same if they allow it to occur by a tenant.
Times are tough and enforcement brings in money! Police will write up.

he he , reminds me of a time around 15 years ago we were having a jam session in a mates garage , his name was joe so we were really jamming at joe's garage  however i digress , on this particular evening we had a bit of a crowd , it was a large garage , mostly members of a hells angels gang we were pals with , just setting the scene here , so we were drinking beer and wine and smoking some nice stuff , and at about 12.30 am a small policeman burst in , himself  he must have thought it was a bunch of teens making a racket , imagine the look of sheer terror on his face when he relised not only the band were bigger than him , there were about 15 bikers with their colours on , a few of the hells angels blocked the door  he started to stutter and said if you turn it down we won't do anything about the dope  he went on to add that him and his partner (who was in the car) had been listening to us for the last 15 mins and thought we rocked  then he tried to get out between two huge bikers to get out the door as fast as he could , he closed the door and the place erupted in laughter , it was a surreal thing to happen , and i bet the cop didn't barge into anywhere again like that , so after that we turned off the half stacks and went acoustic for the next few hours , the cops never came back  , cheers
Alan

+1 to that.

I live on a quiet terraced english street, tend to work 3pm till midnight most days, but thats neither here nor there.

Generally if I'm home in the evenings then my music or guitar will be nice and low, however during the day when everyone is at work and I have a few hours between getting up at 9 and work at 3 then it's kinda license to crank it to the max.

Now that I think of it, you're totally right. But what about when I play Saxophone? I can't control the volume on it like the guitar, so why should my guitar or my sax be a problem of "Noise Violation"?

So we return to my original point. Time to move. I am one of those late shift workers and when I was in an apartment I would knock on a neighbors door and explain that I worked night shift and their music was too loud. That was the end of it. The original poster got no such warning. Just the cops called on him. Most loud music issues in apartments can be resolved with a conversation but NOOOOOOOOO there is always the person that just calls the cops and never gives you a chance to resolve the issue. Stupid noise complaint calls keep cops from doing real police work.
