Im looking at getting a new electric guitar and when I when I went to Guitar Center, I had my mind set on the Stratocaster, but I ended up having two employees tell me that the Les Paul would be the better choice for the music that I like to play which is in between Classic Rock, Rock and Metal. I really like both of the guitars and I'm really confused :? I'm also gonna be starting a band with some of my friends really soon. Wondering what you guys think.

I've got one of each and the Strat is more versatile and I think easier to play. My Strat is my #1 electric, the LP is #4 behind my the strat, SG and tele (in that order). If you're in GC, play 'em both and see which you like better. If you're feeling in a mean mood, ask the GC guys to play them for you. I'll bet the guys who gave you "advice" don't play guitar.

My personal opinion.

As an owner of both Fender and Gibson guitars. If you want a Gibson LP get a Standard not a Studio.
What Stratocaster were you looking at?

I would go with the Fender American Standard over the LP Studio.

I have owned Fender guitars on and off for years. I play rock music. I also own a Les Paul. I had two Gibson flying V es in the past. I also have a Hand made electric made by Axtra guitars of Wisconsin I own an Eric Johnson Stratocaster. If I could only have one Guitar to play out with I would pick the Strat...some things to think of ....will you be using the whammy bar the Gibson Les Paul does not have that. Make sure your amp is good and you will not have a problem with the fender sounding as good as you want. I put custom pickups in many of my guitars in the past to get the tone I wanted. But my Eric Johnson came with great pickups no need to update them. Just my thoughts hope it helps ...Peace

i would get the fender stratocaster over the les paul studio.the les paul studio is not that great of a guitar the pickups are 490 498 rather than burstbuckers pros and the neck is sloppy there is not binding what so ever..i had couple of them and I sold them all.if your looking for a awesome gibson les paul get the classic or the standard nothing less than classic.

For your money you'll get more out of a Fender. You'll need to spend twice as much to get a decent Gibson. There are great Gibsons to be found, just make sure to play it a lot before buying it.
Gibsons are great guitars. I love the sound and sustain of a Les Paul or SG. That being said, I beleive Gibsons quality control has gone down the tubes. I am borrowing a Gibson Goddess SG from a friend and that thing plays like crap. He spent $1200 on the guitar. He had to put $200 into it to have the bridge reset and have a set-up because it had dead spots, bad intonation and it wouldn't stay in tune. After all that it still doesn't sound very good.
But then again if your doing metal, Gibsons are the way to go. Fenders and Gibsons are like apples and oranges. Both guitars are good for certain sounds.

Gibson doesn't have a forums page on their website. And I put the question up on the Fender forums page so that I could get multiple opinions on the two guitars and what would be the best choice. :)

Gibson doesn't sell enough guitars to generate the profits to afford to sponsor a forum like this... does that answer your question? 8)

If you play Blues and Blues-rock, imho the Strat is the better instrument. The Les Paul will sound cool - like ZZ Top - but not the classic blues sound of Clapton, SRV, BB King. Led Zepellin is a lot of Blues through a Les Paul and it has a very heavy sound - metal or "hard rock" is what comes out. I like playing my Strat, if I can ever get it back.

One thing I've found out is that changing the pickups, even at the best place you can find, can turn into a real pain. You're buying at one place and getting them hooked up at another, plenty of driving, and then maybe it doesn't even work like the CS Fat 50s pickup I got that had a dead neck pickup. Then more driving, exchanging, and the guitar's still in the shop. For a hassle-free life, you may want to just buy the guitar with the pickups you want out of the box, but that can get expensive. It's a lot less expensive with a Strat than a Les Paul, for better tone imho, and that's plenty of reason to go with the Strat.

Iam just being honest Iam trying to talk down on gibson guitars.gibsons are very well made guitars if you buy the right gibson guitar-like gibson les paul studio are good guitars if you are on a budget. But there are not the same beast as the Les Paul classic or standard. but in my professional opinion if your going to buy a good gibson guitar and your on a budget i would buy a gibson SG standard it's a much nicer made guitar than the Les paul studio is. but hands down I'm a Fender guy. Fender guitars are the best guitars for the money, gibson are very over priced for what they are. for the price of Les paul studio
you can buy a fender american standard or a fender deluxe and for the price of a Les paul standard you can buy a fender custom shop which are amazing guitars for the money!!

For sure the most versitale will be the strat hands down IF you get the HSS strat. If you get the start with SSS you will have the same limitations you would have with the HH Studio. Go with the HSS strat and you will have all your bases covered!! ;)

I would have to agree that in terms of overall versatility I would definitely go with the Strat.
