Anyone used these? I'm getting to be a string junky. I'll probably give them a try.

I've been looking at these for awhile Andy. I want to string my baritone Telecaster with them, I have to get the Telecaster first, lol.

I saw them advertized in Premier Guitar and they come in 8-38 too,I'd try a set just to satisfy my curiosity.John Petrucci and Slash endorse them,I guess I would too if they kept me equipped with free strings for all my guitars so I don't take much stock in that sort of thing.

I went to both of my local music stores and asked for them as soon as I heard about them from the Namm coverage in February. They will not ship to dealers in the US until March. I currently use super slinkys and I love EB strings. Both stores have them on order for me so I'll let you know what I think as soon as I string em up. I shopped online for them last week and they were on backorder there too.

I'm going to go into GC tomorrow and see if they have them. It gives me an excuse to test drive a few guitars in the vault.

I am NOT a fan of EB's new Cobalt Slinkys! They just sound "weird" to me. I'm not sure I can describe the sound, maybe some combination of "hollow, twingy (not twAngy), lots of sustain, kinda like a string on speed," whatever the hell that means. They ARE louder but just not to my taste. I first put them on a friends Peavey T-60 that I was working on and it sounded the same way; I thought that I had screwed up his guitar. No, it was the strings. I had been using Elixr nanos and they were "ok" but the new EB's - at $9/pack at GC, no thank you. I'm going to give them some more time (if I can stand it) but I think they are coming off my 2001 Am Standard.

Anybody else feel the same way?

Rick

See my review thread Rick. I like them but I have some reservations... :?

I installed the cobalt strings on my JA-90 Telecaster. My experience is similar to others. Not all good, not all bad.
My JA-90 has very hot P90's on it. 11.5k neck and 14.5k bridge. Under normal conditions, I'm at the edge of crunch at all times. With the cobalt strings, my Tele wanted to audition for Metallica. I had to adjust all of my presets to tame the beast.
But they don't sound bad to me and they bend nice. I'm working on the Hotel California solo, which has a lot of bending and they are working nice for that. I think I picked the wrong guitar to try them on. I'm thinking of taking them off the Tele and trying them on my Strat.
So, I guess the cobalts need to be used on the right guitar for the right type of music. They definitely are different and not a fluke or marketing ploy. I think they'll be around for a while. We just need to find the right context to utilize their good qualities. I myself don't mind paying a little more for strings if I feel I'm getting something for my money. I think the cobalts have potential to be worth the cost.
And yes, they do look a little different. Kind of a dull whitish steel look. Not bad, just different.

I'm with you Drew. I thought about adjusting my pick up height to knock down some of the overtones, but I'd just have to readjust them if I went back to regular slinkys.

I'm wondering if tdanb's thought about adjusting pickup height might address what I've perceived as the "weirdness" of the Cobalt strings. I did find last night that the strings sound better when the amp (Blues Jr) is completely clean. I most often play with just a little reverb to help fatten the sound, but going completely clean helped.

Cobalt strings = Yet another expensive gimmick.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.
