The Black Keys are actually one of the newer groups I enjoy! Bravo! It is OK not to like stuff. I don't put down many bands even if I do not take their material seriously. The BKs have inspired me to start recording low-fi with headphones on a Tascam 424 Porta Studio!

I've been singing that tune for ages-what the music industry desperately needs is another musical Renaissance like The British Invasion, sadly the alignment of the planets and stars won't happen like that ever again,so I guess that we're stuck with being bombarded with the insipid, vaccuous tasteless drivel that's being passed off as music on AM and FM stations these days.I'm glad that people who know what real music is can avail of satellite radio, internet stations, downloads and the good old reliable CDs and vinyl. It's a pity that there is a whole generation of kids growing up these days that wouldn't know good music from a McDonalds jingle and whose ideas of high fidelity is an I-pod and a pair of $10 ear buds.

But that's just it; music is going through a MASSIVE renaissance right now, thanks in no small part to the interent (no, this is not going to be another "pirasee iz gud" rant  ). There's such an immense volume of music that is now available at the click of a button, it makes it ridiculously easy to find new artists (as in, hundreds-a-week easy). AS far as sound goes, it's more diverse now than has been in a long time; you have artists going as minimal as a two piece kit, a guitar, and a cheap USB mic to record, as well as those who continuously explore new technologies to make their music, as well as everything in-between. The genre known as "chillwave" or "glo-fi" is an excellent example of a middle ground; lush synths, extensive use a various editing programs, etc., with generally lo-fi recording techniques. And as diverse as all the sounds may be, the countless emerging and resurfacing genres all seem to have a certain vibe to them, and many have taken to grouping them together as part of a "movement" of sorts, known as "Newbreed". It's not the traditional idea of a a movement, in that they all have similar origins and sounds, by more the aesthetic, the fan bases (usually greatly overlapping), and general vibe of the music. This usually is NOT the radio music, mind you, you DO have to go a little past there to get to it, but it is a very big thing nonetheless. It's a very special thing my generation is getting to experience, and I'm sure my description didn't do it much justice (I have a VERY hard time choosing the right words/describing these sorts of things), but that doesn't really surprise me, because as cliche/cheesy as this may sound, you really do have to experience it to some degree to understand what I mean.

And on that note, if anyone is interested in some artists to check out, feel free to PM me :D

@ Floyd-I mentioned about good music being available on the internet as well as CDs and Vinyl but it could hardly be classed as a Rennaisance,as I imagine the majority of people are downloading the same drivel that's dominating the AM and FM stations. In order for a musical movement to be classed as a Rennaisance it would have to be on the scale of The British Invasion and bring a sweeping change to the music industry as a whole but that certainly is not what's happening for the vast majority of young people in particular are musically obtuse and have absolutely no idea of what High Fidelity listening is when they probably spend a total of $50 or less to listen to their tasteless, mass produced, aural pablum on their ubiquitous low budget Chinese made MP-3s.

Bravo to what you said. I do love my Sony cheap MP-3. It is the only chinese thing I own that is worth it's salt.

I think the INDY music scene is doing fine. It is mainstream Pop and commercial entertainment radio that is choking to death.

Each major musical Renaissance since the early 1900's has gotten weaker and weaker...

Jazz--changed everything. As time passed, newer forms of jazz even eclipsed what was created earlier.

Rock & Roll--mixed two genres of lesser popularity (blues and hillbilly/country) and changed everything again...it was left of center to what the average person was listening to, but influenced the mainstream.

British Invasion--emphasized the rock and blues influences, and changed half of the world.

Soul music--Motown, Stax, Atlantic, Volt...went where the Brits couldn't, and changed the other half of the world. It spawned Funk and Disco, and only one of those was good.

After that, it gets shakier.

Funk--awesome music, but limited appeal at the time of it's inception.

Disco--give me a break.

Punk was a revolution, but it was never embraced by the mainstream (such as were Jazz, Rock & Roll, Soul and British bands)...and the first generation of punk fell off the map rather quickly.

New Wave--more pop-oriented and thus more accepted than punk, but it didn't last long.

Grunge...see "Punk" again

In the meantime, hip hop/rap/urban has become the new "pop"...but where has it taken us? Lack of originality and a homogenized art form.

Also in the meantime, Nashvegas won out over good country artists and it mostly unlistenable now.

There is the occasional artist that is truly excellent and accepted as they are--Adele is one that springs to mind immediately...but for every Adele, there's twenty Ashlee Simpsons...

Yeah, you hate pop music. Off topic, however. Jimi Hendrix also was a crossover pop star, using old blues. Dan Auerbach is as close as it gets to the new Jimi Hendrix in 2012. I wasn't trying to say that the Black Keys is punk. I know you like punk. That's cool. I like punk too. At his height, Jimi Hendrix was at the top of the pop world. Last year, the Black Keys won 3 grammys. I'm not saying that's good or bad; it just is.

I wasn't trying to say they are punk, and I most certainly do NOT hate pop music. I was saying that they are taking something that has been around for quite some time and watering it down to sell to all the indie kids that haven't quite looked past their local college radio station yet. They sell themselves as lo-fi, when in reality they just use very slight vocal distortion and a fuzzbox on the guitar.
