Hi
I've been using my boss RC 3 Looper at home with my strat and roland microcube for practicing and it's a great practice tool.
I used it for the first time last night at much louder volumes in a rehearsal room. There was a lot of hiss. I see from a few posts on line this can be a problem with the RC3.
I tried it through a solid state amp and a Fender hot rod deluxe and it had the same issue. Also it was used in a line of three pedals with a daisy chain and also plugged into the boss power supply itself with the same results. This hiss stopped once I took it out of the chain.
Has anybody tried useing a noise suppressor/gate with the Boss RC 3 - if so does this help to reduce hiss?

I don't have a looper (yet) but I use an old Rocktron HUSH pedal (the big blue one) to prevent hiss and reduce feedback...I recommend it whole-heartedly for guitar and harp (harmonica) mic.

I also own an ISP Decimator G-String, and whole heartedly recommend it for guitar; the reason it is not on my board (and thus currently for sale) is the fact it doesn't work well with a harp mic. It just doesn't work that way.

Both of those devices work very well...I did not like the Boss noise reducer (I know many people who do like them, and have good luck with them)...they strangled my sustain and added some slight metallic trailing overtones at the end of the notes...might not be a problem for a metal or heavy rock player, but for my kind of music, not so much...also didn't work too well with a harp mic.

...but as always, check out everything on your own, figure out what works for you and please tell us what end up doing...

I too, am having the problem with my RC300.
I have my Bass and Strat plugged in with each one going left and the other right into respective separate amps..
Now I had no problem when I used just the one amp and both channels going into the one amp. When the two are running I get a hiss in the Fender amp. I first though dodgy lead to the Bass. No not that, next dodgy Bass, nope, not that either.
So I went to the guitar shop techy-head guy. He said it was to do with the earthing when you have two amps plugged in at the same time. Now he said there was a solution but, my thinking is, if the RC300 shows I can run two amps l+R then I should I not be getting a hiss? Ok, so if I unplug one amp, the hiss goes. Strange!!!!
BTW, have you got the foot dancing off to a tee yet?? All I need is a handbag to put on the floor and it looks like I am at a early 80s disco. lol
Wait, that made me sound sooo !@$ then!!

Hi
Thanks for the replies. I checked out the Hush pedal on the Rocktron website and looks like a simple pedal to use which is always a bonus. It's a lot cheaper than the ISP.
I tried my RC 3 looper with my Roland micro cube up full volume today and there's hardly any hiss on JC Clean but it tends to get louder the further i move to the gain settings so maybe it's the interaction with an amps gain.
I'm also going to use the looper pedal playing acoustic through a pa so I'll see how that is, as it's a totally clean sound.
and Keith my foot dancing isn't that good yet but I'm working on it! :)

Pardon my ignorance, but does the looper have distortion/gain settings on it?

The combo of the unit's gain-induced noise plus your amp's gain-induced noise could add up to a hissy mess (just like my wife's cousin! :P ).

...and yes, the Hush unit is easy to use, but don't just crank it to eleven and take off...you will be disappointed, because the most extreme settings will destroy your sustain. It takes a little bit of tweaking to balance between maximum noise reduction and minimum impact on your sustain. It is as transparent as any pedal I've ever heard, with no coloration on the tone whatsoever.
