saw in Ceri's post he mentions Engelbert Humperdink then today heard he was representing UK in Eurovision, not heard the song yet, 75 he is now, still time for us all eh, must get the spandex looked out

Yes yes yes!!! :D

I heard this news last night - I think it is totally sureal, utterly hilarious and complete genius. He'll either make the Eurovision Contest look even sillier than it does already, or he'll sneak a surprise upset win. After all, he can't help but be ten times better than anyone else on the show, can he?

We heard an item about this on the radio whilst crossing Waterloo Bridge in a taxi, and they played Engelbert's latest single... which is a number called Lesbian Seagull. I kid you not! We were weeping with laughter and the cab driver could hardly steer he was guffawing so hard. I had to check it wasn't April the first.

What will Engelbert come up with for Eurovision? Hey, we may have to watch it for the first time in 40 years...

Cheers - C

Lesbian Seagull   , I thought I'd heard it wrong when listening to the radio the other day, now after calling it up on youtube I've got one of those sorta frozen quizical looks on my face, caw caw caw what the , is it shock tactics, very weird, up on youtube also is a beavis and butthead rendition of the same song, exactly where you'd expect, got to be tongue in cheek....surely, can't wait for eurovision though gotta see this just gotta
Rhumba if your comeback needs a shot in the arm can I suggest perhaps a cross dressing dog theme....you never know

Wow!! it's true, I've just heard it on youtube too, is he going to sing that on Eurovision, haha I can't get my head round it, it's bizarre. I don't know what to say.
I've got to agree fella's, it's that far out there it will probably win that show. Fantastic.
Rip, the dog theme has got to be worth a thought now, woof woof woof. :D

Wow Rhumba what a thread. It's so cool to hear first hand, The stories of the early "British Music Scene" back then. All things I would never hear otherwise. Keep the stories comeing. 8)

Well Danny, I can tell you of the opening night in around 1964 I think, not too sure. The Rolling Stones were booked in to play and I think David John and the Mood were the support.
The club was absolutely jam packed and so was the streets outside and all of Rochdale town centre. If you weren't already in the place, you could not get anywhere near and the Rolling Stones didn't get anywhere near, they were stopped in a small place called Littleborough just outside of Rochdale by the police and turned back.
The night was abandoned and the police spent probably most of the night clearing the crowds away.
But one thing I can tell you Danny is that two of the Stones got through and into the club.
Funny thing is that I was talking in the local pub here last thursday about this with our manager of the day, who helped to run the Cubi with Clive Kelly and there was a topic of special interest.
The two that made it in were Brian Jones and Bill Wyman. I know this is true because there was a photograph of them both hanging on the office wall and the photo of course was taken in the office, it was definitely genuine. And verified by our manager and Clive Kelly, they really were in there.
That photograph hung in there for almost the full duration of the Cubi but then one day vanished and everyone was looking at everybody else suspiciously.
To this day nobody knows who took it and this topic came up again the other night while we drank our Guinness. Tony swears it wasn't him and I know it wasn't me but someone has a little gem tucked away somewhere...Hmmm the mystery goes on.

Just in passing I recall a group called the Applejacks played there and they had a girl bass player, one Meagan Davis, quite unusual for those days to have female band members. I remember we were sat in the dressing room and she was writing some entries in her diary, I wonder if I got a mention, ha.
There was another group though who had a girl drummer called the Honeycombs, yeah I remember them.
Anyway Danny I'll think of some more tidbits later, see ya then. 8)

I must be getting old if I'm writing my memoirs but yeah, I know what you mean fella's and don't forget, after the book there is the film.
But I've always thought of the forum as a place to give freely because I've learned a lot here for free. We all have information that some others have an interest in and I believe we should continue to share our interests and life experiences, it's what makes the forum.
Onwards and forwards guys. 8)

Rhumba: a Dance to the Music of Manchester.

Spielberg to direct, Daniel Craig to star as Rhumba. A runaway international hit is born! 8)

Cheers - C

Haha. I don't care what people say, rock and rhumba are here to stay. If Richie Blackmore could quit trumpeting through the tulips and polish his chops, he could play in the life of rhumba. Kind of a lookalike.

I read in an obit that Davy Jones is from Manchester. He was a goodun.

Cheers Glenn, Haha, when Ritchie hears he's been considered I'm sure he'll be delighted.
I don't know whether you guys get 'Coronation Street' over there in the States but it's one of our longest running tv soaps, if not the longest and it's based around Manchester.
Well back in the early sixties, a very young Davy Jones made a brief appearance as the grandson of Ena Sharples, haha, I guess you had to be there but I've seen a picture somewhere, can't think where. It might be in that Manchesterbeat newsletter.
Anyway as a sidenote Glenn, I've lost three and a half stone and I feel a ton better, I'll post a pic sometime of the new look me, yeah wow!
Hope you and the family are keeping well.
