Edited by poster.

Just picked this up off an agent friend of mine, in fact I worked for him in the early days with a group called the BlueNotes and I see him now in a local pub. It might interest some.

It's getting past my bedtime here so I'll add more info tomorrow.

Hi Rhumba: I love the gig posters - especially the one for 29 May 1967. Hendrix, Cream, Pink Floyd, The Move and others all on one bill. Shazam, what a night that was! 8)

As you know, my wife is from a couple of miles down the road from you. That same year she saw Hendrix on one of those mixed bill shows. However, he was way down the list: the show she went to was headlined by the Walker Brother and also Engelbert Humperdinck. Hendrix was merely a side turn - hee-hee!

(Mrs C was very young at the time.)

Thanks for sharing - C

Great memories and nice to see 'The Move' mentioned.

Hi guys, glad you find that interesting, I'm doing a flying visit I have to dash off out again but if you take a look at venues and Rochdale the CubiKlub, well that was my main stomping ground, Clive Kelly owned the place and our manager ran the place.
I was about 13 but probably more 14 and we played there every saturday afternoon for the kids, we were like the matinee show, haha but I got to see lots of big bands, I'll tell more later.
Ceri, it was usual for three bands to play a venue, it was almost the norm. I can remember doing a circuit in that three bands did three venues, like we would do an hour from 8.00 at one place then shift around and do the next hour at the next place, the other band followed the pattern and then the next, it had to be a tight area but it worked and we like did three gigs a night. Work was plentiful then.
I always regret never seeing Jimi Hendrix play, it was by all accounts, something everyone should have seen and of course..heard.
Talk later guys I have to go. 8)

Now that takes me back
We played the Cubiklub as support act for the Drifters the week that "Down at the club" came out
Talked to Johnny More for ages afterwards, he was asking what local words like "Skrike" (To bawl out crying) meant
If you go to a-z of groups on Manchesterbeat site, then the Chariots page, mine is the last letter at the bottom
Happy days

Thanks for posting Rhumba, the line on page one saying Manchester is home to many bands from "Freddie and the Dreamers to Oasis" prompted these 2 vid's:

I'm Telling You Now - Freddy And The Dreamers

http://youtu.be/7lIup-Dma1I

Oasis - Champagne Supernova [Manchester 1997]

http://youtu.be/ydKXZ0yT8Ys

(Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon in the video with Freddie and the Dreamers kinda blew my mind)

Yeah, thanks Soilid a couple of classic songs there but I got to admit, I did find Freddie just a bit too bizarre. He did some good songs though.

Thanks tedj, the name Sweet Chariot rings a bell, are you still local?
Yes we had some great times at the Cubi and saw lots of top bands at night. As I mentioned earlier we mostly did saturday afternoon and some of the bands that were playing the night shift arrived early. I'll always remember Jimmy Powel ( 5 Dimensions ) jumping up on to the stage and banging out with us on the piano. One day SteamPacket arrived early and in our audience that day we had Long John Baldry, Brian Auger, Julie Driscol and among others, this young up and coming lad called Rod Stewart.
I'll never forget Screamin' Jay Hawkins glaring at us from the side and one of my personal favourite memories was Alexis Korner showing me his SG in the dressing room, one of the early ones with Les Paul markings. Fantastic guy, had time for everybody.
Such wonderful times, I don't think I'll see days like them again.

Hi Rip, yeah it brings back great memories, those were the daze.
I've been slimming down recently, ready for my comeback, all I need now is the band. :D
I remember someone telling me they went to see Engelbert back in the late sixties and how surprised they were at the rocking show he put on.
But I doubt he will be rockin' it in the Eurovision but like you say, at 75 there's hope for all of us.

Great stories, friend. You don't have to be too slim to gain popularity with your new blues instruments. Those leather pants might cut your wind off though. :D I love these stories of the old days. Keep them coming! Peace brother. G

Hi Glenn, how's things man? I remember I was giving you my life story on Facebook not long back, I do tend to go on a bit when I get going.
I joined in with a folk group down the pub a couple of weeks back, it was good fun. Kinda put a blues twist into it, I thought it sounded good....not everybody did. haha.
Yeah the Cubi, I remember one night the Mojos played. Between sets they were sat at tables having a drink and we asked them for their autographs, in which they politely obliged. We then told them we were the Bluenotes and did they want our autographs... but they declined.
Screaming Jay Hawkins was a character. Do you know they reckoned he had about seventy odd kids around the world? and I don't know how many women.
One of my favourite groups to play there though was a fairly local band called David John and the Mood, I had initially been instructed to go and watch 'em, or one of 'em anyway.
A singer called Davey Morgan was in the Cubi one night and he was listening to us rehearsing and he gave us all some advice on playing, performing etc.
I was the rhythm player back then and I banged out the chords, a bit like Bruce did for Hank in the Shadows and Davey told me not to do so. In rhythm and blues it actually requires more than that. Back up the other guitar player with fills and interesting guitar lines." Go and listen to the rhythm player in David John and the Mood " was the order. So I did when they were on and watched the guitarists interact and it sounded brilliant. I learned a lot that night, probably one of my best lessons. The Stones were the same really.
I learned most of my stuff standing in front of the stage in the Cubi watching the top bands and in those cellar clubs the sound was very good too.
Anyway Glenn, I'll get off now so take care of yourself, good to hear from ya. 8)

Yes yes yes!!! :D

I heard this news last night - I think it is totally sureal, utterly hilarious and complete genius. He'll either make the Eurovision Contest look even sillier than it does already, or he'll sneak a surprise upset win. After all, he can't help but be ten times better than anyone else on the show, can he?

We heard an item about this on the radio whilst crossing Waterloo Bridge in a taxi, and they played Engelbert's latest single... which is a number called Lesbian Seagull. I kid you not! We were weeping with laughter and the cab driver could hardly steer he was guffawing so hard. I had to check it wasn't April the first.

What will Engelbert come up with for Eurovision? Hey, we may have to watch it for the first time in 40 years...

Cheers - C
