I can't remember a time when the strat wasn't cool. Maybe for a short time at the peak of the hair band days.

It's an apples and oranges comparison. Gibson is in a quite different business from Fender in many ways. The guitars are designed, built and marketed differently. I've owned a number of them and only one has really been all that impressive.

Gibson has always tried to be the upscale guitar that you buy when you make it while Fender has sold reliable instruments to players that put them to use but don't necessarily want to spend big bucks for a good instrument.

When I found myself wanting another Les Paul I bought Custom Tele FMT HH and I like it every bit as much as I liked any Gibson LP I've ever owned. Besides that I can lift it without straining and play it for hours without cutting off the cirulation to my left arm and it can get just as heavy sounding as a Les Paul. It's a much better deal IMO.

If you HAVE to have a Gibson solidbody, go for Hamer USA instead. I've been lucky and have a couple of all-mahogany USA Standards and factory equipped HB all-mahogany USA Specials. I think they're the best Gibsons Gibson never made, and I'm NOT getting rid of mine! BTW, Fender now owns Kaman, and by extension, Hamer.

The Gibson manufacturing process is very labor intensive.
The most expensive part is the famous nitrocellulose finish on the Les Paul.
They put 7+ layers as it seeps into the wood.
The advantage is that the wood breaths and ages well.
This adds to the tone. Other advantage is that you can do touch-ups without totally sanding down the guitar.

You could also replace the lipstick pickup on a 52 telecaster with an Alnico Humbucker...

both Fender and Gibson have been there since the beginning of time. Both are great axes... Ibanez RG also a good guitar (less from a collector standpoint) also some less known out there such as LAG.

The price issue comes from lower cost manufacturing (china, mexico, etc.) and maintaining the brand...this costs alot and sometimes involves legal dispute.

agree...that's why I have an old Les Paul and wouldn't buy a new one.

PS: I love my 52 Tele...
