Maybe its just me or Gibsons are really more expensive compared to Fenders. Is it something luxery related to own a Gibson or whats the deal? :?

I think it has a lot to do with the cost to build a Les Paul. There is a lot more to do to build a Les Paul. But the tone is in the Strat if you ask me. The Les Paul is a little over designed if you ask me.

@FriendlyGuitarAddict: What's the average price on American Standards and American Deluxe strats in Sweden?

Headstock angle, neck angle and glued in neck. The use of Tonewoods
like Mahogany body and neck, maple top and Brazilian rosewood finger
board. Bindings and real mother of pearl inlays and nitro finish.
All this makes the Gibson Les Paul an expensive guitar to build.

Personally i like Fenders better but if i had the money i would buy me
a Gibson.

Peter

Not gonna read all the prior response, so forgive if this repreats.

At least 3 factors contribute to Gibby priceyness. First: setnecks are more labor-intensive. Second, nitro finishes are more labor intensive. Last, Gibson intentionally tries to cultivate an "upscale" image ("Only a Gibson is good enough" is an actual corporate slogan).

Gibsons cost more for 5 reasons: (or more)

- Mahogany bodies are NOT cheap, espeacially judging by how much mahogany they use per guitar!

- Gibsons are all made by Americans. If they had like fifty percent of the output going to the Mexicans, Japanese, and Indonesians if I'm not mistaken, they could charge way less for a guitar. Americans require better salaries and more benefits so naturally that's one way of off setting the cost.

- The image of a Gibson is that they are the greatest instruments ever made, they're made by the best luthiers in the world and they're made out of the greatest woods for a guitar; Nonsense. They say mahogany is the best tonewood for a guitar, meanwhile they also sell a swamp ash studio that costs a little less and sounds almost exactly the same. Still deep and throaty, and everything. (Coincidence? I DON'T THINK SO!)

- They also have tons and tons of endorsers. Fender also has tons and tons of endorsers like Yngwie Malmsteen, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Sting, Jeff Beck, the list goes on. Yet, Fenders are still way cheaper? :?

-Nitro laquer has to be put on by experts, and it's not cheap. (Hey Gibson, try using KTM-9!) They also lap so much on it's no wonder a guitar takes forever to finish.

- I think that the thing that effects price the most is the process of making a typical Gibson guitar. A humbucker pickup is a little more difficult to make, flame maple tops on every Les Paul, Mahogany everything, hand done dovetails, binding on every top selling guitar, gold hardware on every other Gibson, and more stuff like that.

I think Gibson does have the ability to make the guitars even $500 dollars cheaper and keeping all of their American employees (and not hiring foreigners) They've proved that with the faded SG they offered last year and I do believe it's still being offered. Looked like crap, but they put way less laquer, ditched the huge block inlays and inlayed logo, stuck some slightly substandard pickups, all for less than 1k (like 599 I think, but don't get too excited). They also made an SG3, a V, a V3, 3 different Les paul studios, and a les paul doublcut with P90s. ALL of these guitars have gotten very good reviews and all of them cost less than 1k on musiciansfriend. Imagine if they also used ash and alder instead of mahogany for this range! :?:

Because people continue to pay the prices Gibson wants for them. Consequently, the prices will continue to rise every 5 months or so, like they've been for years.

If people stopped paying these prices, you'd seem them fall practically over night; apparently, this is NOT going to happen.

Also of note is the fact that contrary to popular belief, not all the hardware on them is American either.

Hey--I like both-but I got my Fender on sale, and my Gibson used & on sale.
I got both when they weren't the "cool" guitar to have. That helped as well. SO yeah--if Gibson or Fender sees people aren't willing to pay as much for their guitars--you could see the price dropping.
