Way more expensive and you don't get anything more then the Gibson name for the money. They don't offer higher quality or better tone or playability.

The LP standard is about $2200 and it's no different then the Am standard Strat, only twice as expensive.

The LP studio is about the same as a Highway One and it's twice as expensive at about $1000.

People are willing to pay it for some reason, so they keep charging more.

Hello FriendlyGuitarAddict,

Gibsons cost more because they are more labor
intensive to produce. They are made in a more
traditional, old school method of luthiery. Also
all Gibsons are finished in nitro-cellulose lacquer,
a more costly process. Gibsons are fine instruments
and you are getting what your paying for. I've
owned about 1/2 dozen, great axes.

This said I still like Stratocasters best.

Cheers.

Yeah, Gibsons manufacturing process is more intensive (it doesn't have to be). I have to disagree that they are worth the price difference though.

They have just as many, if not more, finish problems out the door then Fender. I wouldn't say LP's play any better then an equivalent Strat, just different. I wouldn't say they sound better then a Strat, just different. In the end you still just have an equivalent solidbody electric guitar. For almost twice the money.

I've had a bunch of LP's and still have one. I like em. I'm a Strat man though, thru and thru.

I agree. That extra 3/4 in scale length makes a LOT of difference, as well as the features.

I once bought a brand new LP Standard several years ago (now long gone). Problems?

1. There was a big chip out of the finish around one of the studs at the tailpiece.

2. The body binding wasn't one piece--it had about 2" spliced above the neck joint on the body on the bass side.

3. There was a big chunk out of the Rosewood fretboard at the 20th fret, along the fret-they had patched it up with epoxy, and the epoxy was crumbling out of the fret slot!

And NO, it WASN'T a 'second'!

If you want to get a really GOOD Gibson, go for Hamer-which is (funnily enough) now owned by Fender. BTW, I have NEVER seen the above problems in a Fender! Or a Hamer!

Also someone has to pay for the expensive photo shoots with Kiefer Sutherland with his signature model, so they gladly pass that along to the consumer

Simply because they can.

The funny thing is, people are paying these prices left and right. So, more power to'em.

AH ... I have it :!:
They cost twice as much because they weigh twice as much :!:
Nothing to do with quality, guitars are sold by the pound.

The weight of LP's are the one thing that makes me scream and runaway from them. SG's are cool though  but I would rather have a fender or schecter

For the cost of a Les Paul standard you can get a MIM or USA Strat/Tele with a pretty smoking amp and effects if you work the deal properly. Gibsons are cool but man the expense in obtaining one.

Highway One Strat: $500
Bassman RI: $1200

That's $1700 and there's still $500 left for effects if you're comparing to a LP standard at $2200.

One guitar or nice guitar, great amp, cool fx?

Not too long ago Fender invested millions of dollars on a huge state of the art automated manufacturing facility... I remember reading about it. I'm certain that Fender could also produce the Les Paul (if they wanted to!) at a fraction of the cost Gibson incurs to produce the same instrument!

That was my point earlier when I said Gibson didn't have to be more labor intensive. Today's CNC technology could crank them out faster and cheaper.
