RIP Davy Jones.
The Monkees! One of my favorite shows while growing up. They had some good songs for that time period. Funny as heck too.

R.I.P. Davy Jones.
When The Monkees television show aired back then it stole The Beatles thunder. The Monkees had some great songs, good time memories.

I was truly shocked to find out that Davy had died,I had always thought of him as the perpetual teenager-a Dorian Grey sort of person. My first chord/song book was The Monkees first album and the first song my first band learned was Stepping Stone. You are in God's hands now Davy and in my eyes you'll be forever young.

Little known fact about Jones. February 9, 1964 was the night the BEATLES first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show. That same night on the same stage a former jockey turned stage actor named Davy Jones also appeared with other cast members of the Broadway play "OLIVER" to do a scene outtake from their hit show on the nationwide broadcast from the NYC theater where David Letterman's CBS Late Night is recorded now. At the time then 17 year old Jones had a major role as the Artful Dodger in the play. He later remarked that, "I watched the Beatles from the side of the stage, I saw the girls going crazy, and I said to myself, this is it, I want a piece of that." I think he got a piece.

Jones got a Tony nomination for his work in "Oliver." But is was on the strength of Jones' Sullivan appearance alone that Columbia Pictures sought out Jones and signed him to a contract for TV, film and recording in all three of their major entertainment divisions. He started doing guest roles in TV shows for Screen Gems and cut an entire solo album for Colpix, both Columbia subsidiaries.

By the time Columbia's Screen Gems TV production division started preparing for auditions for THE MONKEES TV show Jone's Colpix album was already a minor hit and they wanted all along for Jones to be cast in the show and getting approval of the producers of the TV show was more or less a formality. He was the perfect choice and Columbia figured he would be the star of the show. The final 14 candidates for the 4 available roles each did a screen test. His stage, TV and recording experience made him seem at ease. The Monkees show was only on the air from September 1966 to March 1968 (two seasons) but he stuck primarily to music the remainder of his career with the exception of rare TV guest appearances in which he played himself.

Some Monkees music held up very well, especially the earlier work. A career very well done. My personal favorite Monkees cut was "Pleasant Valley Sunday."

Thanks for sharing that. I too love the Monkees since they came out when I was in 4th grade. I disagree with the person who posted earlier that they had stolen The Mighty Beatles thunder. No way! They sold records sure! They were no Beatles however! RIP Mr. Jones! I remember in the 70s in one of the teeny bopper mags, someone wrote that David Bowie was Davey Jones of The Monkees! Bowies' real name is David Jones.

They played across the street from Disneyland at a place (not there anymore) called Melodyland. Other famous acts from that era had played there as well.

Was on the road when I heard about it. I loved the Monkees when I was a young lad. Louie Shelton was one of my favorite guitarists even before I knew his name or who he was.

I was able to see the Monkees twice (without Nesmith), and both shows were great.

RIP
