Hey everybody,
I'm looking to join a band, and find myself in need of a more powerful amp than my current vibro champ xd. I'm looking for a good sounding tube amp around 15-20 watts, but there must be some sort of low power option (power soak, pentode/triode, headphone input ...). Does anybody own or know of an amp like this?
P.S. Not looking to break the bank on this one, especially if its not a combo
Thanks!

Ampeg GVT15-112 might have what you're looking for.

Else there's Peavey Windsor Studio, Orange Tiny Terror / Dark Terror...

hmm, interesting options...
peavey looks promising (i have my eye on a classic 20 ATM)
the ampeg also seems good, although it'd probably be harder to find used
do you know whats the difference between the tiny terror and the dark terror?

G'day.

I think the Ampeg has only been out a very short while so I doubt you'd find a used one too easily.

From what I've read on the Oranges, the dark terror is a higher gain version (more hard rock / metal oriented).

15-20 watts may be a bit on the small side if you're looking to join a band. I've played in a band with a friend who has a (15 watt) blues junior. While he was able to hold his own in practice, and it might do okay in a small club, I wouldn't trust it as a main gigging amp. Somewhere in 30-40 watt range would usually work. There have been gigged where I've had to nearly dime my 40 watt Deluxe VM in order to be heard over the rest of the band. But I guess it depends on what you're going to use it for.

15 watts will leave you wanting more. Go alittle bigger. And depends on what kind of music you are playin.

Peavey classic 30.... Some of the older Peavey VT amps are really cheap... Not sure how they sound though.

Peavey classic amps sound really sweet...

The biggest reservation I have about a 30 or 40 watter is that you cant get good tones at apartment levels (unless its got a switchable power feature). I'm looking for a good amp to jam with and maybe play a few small gigs, so there's no real need for such a monster yet...

Egnater Rebel 20. Mine's been rock solid for over a year and a half. It has been gigged and rehearsed almost daily. You can dial it from 1 to 20 watts and it has both 6V6 and EL84 power tubes that can be blended to any degree. If you need two channels and Reverb, the Rebel 30 would do the trick.

Look into the Vox Valvetronix series,I have a Vox AD120VTH and that has 1W, 5W,15W, 30W and 60W all in stereo. These amps also have fantastic amp modeling and the most realistic copies of classic effects on the market.

I have heard good things about the egnaters, dying to try out the 30 combo (cant afford both the 20 head and a decent cab), but i don't know that they would be easy to find used or if they would even fit into my budget used (max 400).

They seem pretty reasonable used. I've been playing for over 40 years, had just about every Fender amp since 1965 and my Egnater so far rates right up there with the best sounding and reliable amps I've ever owned. My worst was my HRDlx. I gigged with a 76 100 watt Twin Reverb for over 30 years but have had everything from a 65 Vibrolux Reverb through a Bandmaster. The only Fender amp I own now is a 74 Champ. I've also had Dano amps, Ampeg, Silvertone, Sunn etc. No Marshalls though. Nice amps, but not really for me.

It might well be, but it depends on the band. In my band, I've used my Blackstar HT-5R and that was fine. It was turned up towards full, but it sounds quite good like that to be honest.

I would think, normally, 15 watts would be minimum-although 15 or 20 might be fine. For gigging too though, you would need more like 30 or 40, as tgs said.
