As I was helping to carry a (very heavy) running machine today, the base decided to spring open and neatly skinned top and bottom off the end of the second finger on my left (fretting) hand. Very painful, now strapped up and hoping against hope it'll be ok for band rehearsal on Thursday night.

To be honest, at the split second it happened, I thought for one God-awful moment it had taken my finger off. Made me go cold just thinking about it.

I guess I was very lucky to get away with it - and I'll be using gloves whenever I shift things from now on, I promise :-)

Stiggie, sorry to hear about that. Ouch is right. :( Hope it heals up well, but unless you are an extremely fast healer, I wouldn't be betting on Thursday night for you to be able to fret with that hand.

I saw Ed King back in the early 90s; he had gotten his hand slammed in a car door and was bandaged up pretty badly.

However, he had a "free" pinky, so he slipped on a slide and played all night. It was very cool, with Andy Timmons and several other spectacular guitarists on stage, and he held his own with one finger.

You might give that a shot.

stiggie_9, heal up quick Bro, please don't do further damage, wear a glove while working, if some one wise cracks, charge him a fiver not to punch him with your good hand, lol. My old guitar player from the Knights (R.I.P. Chuck) taped his damaged finger to his little finger to stabilize it, in your situation it would be to your ring finger or your index. Rock on.

Thanks for the good wishes guys. I'm sure it'll heal ok, given time.

I'll have to see how it is for Thursday. Fingers crossed. Well, some of them, anyway :-)

The main thing is that you did no permanent damage or never lost part of or all your finger,it can happen in the blink of an eye.Work gloves are always a good idea for everyone but especially so for musicians, although a lot of us rarely think of them. I've had so many close calls that gloves are automatic.

Exercise caution in everything you do. I was wearing gloves when a very large piece of pipe hit my left thumb and broke it as well as, 4 stitches. Ny first reaction was, "Damn, can I play like this?" Well, I could, but got into a bad habit of holding my hand weird, took a long time to recover, not the thumb, my technique.

I had a buddy that was putting a roll of carpet up onto his ladder rack of his truck and somehow his wedding ring caught on something and WHAM  ....his finger was torn right off and fell on the ground in front of his son.He later told me it happened so fast that for a second he thought he just smashed it bad.Gloves are a great idea as well as not wearing rings when doing any type of construction work or working around machinery.Crazy huh!! They were unable to save it in spite of best attempts.I never wear my ring now when working on ladders or anything that it might catch on funky.

Black Sabbeths sound came from Tony loosing his finger tips when he worked in a foundry. He made leather caps for his fingers and tuned down and they got their sound. Not a good way to go about it.

Thinking about it some more, and reading some of the replies you guys have posted, I realise just how lucky I was!

The finger's doing ok. I took off the dressing yesterday morning to let the air in and hopefully dry up the wounds. It doesn't look as bad as I thought it might - in fact, it seems to be healing pretty quickly. Rather than strap it up again, I've used some spray-on dressing - a sort of plastic skin. I've not tried it before but it seems great. It covers the wounds up and stops dirt and infection getting in, but allows the air through to speed up the healing.

And best of all, last night I tentatively picked up one of the guitars and I can still play :-) The finger's a bit stiff and sore, so I'll have to be careful with it, but hopefully I'll be ok for band rehearsal tomorrow night, all being well.

Once again, thanks for all the good wishes - much appreciated.
