Q: How do you get to Carnegie Hall?

A: Practice.

I have trouble playing and counting out loud at the same time--chords, melody, single note riff--anything.

My vocal chords seem to be disconnected when I start playing--yet I can walk & chew gum at the same time.

I wish I could. When I start playing complex rhythms it will sometimes throw me off... But if you practice it gets easier, it has for me at least.
