Today I was talking with a guy who's a regular at the guitar shop I work at. He said that he's just bought a vintage Twin Reverb and he's looking to downsize a bunch of stuff. He's possibly getting rid of a 60's era bassman and bandmaster, but he also mentioned that he has a Univox he wants to sell for $200. It's a 100 watt head, with four channels. He says he thinks it's a PA head, but people use them for bass or guitar too. I've done some research on them and I'm thinking it's a Univox U-1086.

Here's a page with some information on one which I think is the same model he's talking about.

Only, it's black and grey and has knobs like this one.

In general, there's not very much information out there about them. But, I was also able to find a schematic for one from the Univox website.
http://www.univox.org/pics/schematics/u1086.gif

But I don't read schematics so I really have no idea what any of that means. Hopefully someone who does could shed some light on what it is and how it works.

Also, he said he'd throw in a Peavey 212 cabinet for free with the head, so it would be $200 for both. Of course, someday I would change the cabinet if I did get it. I might even try building one. It might be easier than a guitar since there's no painting involved and it would probably be a good learning experience since reading schematics and understanding amps is something I'd like to be able to do one day. But I'm getting way ahead of myself here. I haven't even checked it out in person yet.

So does anyone think it's worth it to pursue? He said he's in no hurry to sell it, which is great because after the Memphis trip and before SXSW is about the worst possible time for me to be spending anything. Much less $200.

Oh, and one other thing. Jeff Beck supposedly used these Univox stacks in the early '70s. I love Jeff Beck, and some of my favorite stuff of his came out right around then. Does anyone know if he actually used any Univox gear recording in that time period?

Hi TGS,I looked up Univox heads in the Vintage Guitar Guide and that amp isn't listed but it seems that all guitar and bass amps are listed. For amp heads only, the price ranges from$225-$275 so I think that you'd be doing very well to get the amp and cab for just$200.A lot of people used PA heads for guitar amps,Marshall PAs in particular were picked up used and put to work as guitar amps.A guy who I was in a band with back in the early 70s used a 100W Silvertone PA head for guitar and that thing sounded great.Back in the late 60s Sunn amps made a disasterous move to supply Sunn amps for one of Jimi's US tours. The Sunn guitar amps were so trouble prone that he stopped using them except for the monster Colluseum PA heads which he used for guitar.A PA Head should give you a pretty good sound because they are made to cover a wide frequency range since they are used for micing every sort of instrument as well as vocals.

BTW:When Sunn sponsored Jimi et al with their amps they started an ad campaign lauding Jimi's use of them, their slogan was:"Have you ever felt a sound?Jimi Hendrix uses Sunn amps."

hey ther buddy, this sounds like a great deal! I'd certainly jump on that. Those old univox amps can get a great, thick sound. It coming with a 2-12 cab even sweetens the deal. But if you really want to tear down the walls, look into matching her with a 2-15!

I realize this post is 2 years old, but TGS, did you ever get this Univox amp?
I have been offered a 70's head and dual cabinets myself and I would like to know your thoughts.

You shouldn't even question it, that's an amazing deal, especially with the cab.

Take the amp and the test gear in the background.

Really. That seems to be a rare model Heathkit oscilloscope.
