I'm here with one eye on the computer and the other on the TV about a woman who is undergoing gastric bypass surgery. In no time she had shed 300lbs.She told the interviewer that she at normally and that there were days that she had to force herself to eat.Unbeknownst to her they asked family members and they spilled the beans on her and told them the true amount she ate-it was enough to choke a horse.Anyway after she had gone down to 600 lbs. she had a massive coronary and died. One good thing came of this though, when word came out about her life's story eating disorder clinics were swamped with morbidly obese people seeking help to loose weight.I had a cousin who weighed 350 lbs.,she joined Weight Watchers and lost 200 lbs. That was 35 years ago and she's still as skinny as a rail.I used to be very overweight but finally got sick of looking at my bloated body and knocked it all off before it got out of hand.I just can`t for the life of me understand how people can let themselves go to such incredible extremes. There`s a lot more to it than loving food.I think that somewhere down the road medical science will find that some people are predisposed for obesity just as they believe some are predisposed for alcoholism or even psychopathy.

I didn't see her grave but her casket could've held almost 3 people side by side-no exaggeration.

I have an in-law who is extremely heavy, even though she eats like a bird...yes, she consumes half of her body weight every day, just like a sparrow.  :P

I should give her credit, though. Recently she went on a diet and lost a lot of weight. She's now down to 36-22-36...of course, that's just her right leg, but hey, it's progress...

To be serious, I truly feel sorry for the people whose genetic makeup or chemical imbalances create weight gain, no matter how healthy their lifestyle may be.

I have a friend who eats far less than me, exercises regularly and takes care of himself, and he still has problems with his weight. His whole family is big, so it lends credence to the "genetics" argument.

At one point early in our marriage, Lady Armadillo got somewhat heavy (compared to her normal size)...it was due to the birth control pill she was taking. When she got off of the pill (there were other bad side effects on top of the weight gain), she went back down to her normal slim self. That lends itself to the "chemical" imbalance issue (in that case an external chemical/medication instead of a thyroid gone haywire or some such "natural" hormonal/chemical issue.

A few years ago, I gained a large amount of weight due to a combination of a particular blood pressure medication and an addiction to one of those girly Starbucks coffees with chocolate and whipped cream. I started exercising, quit the Starbucks, and changed medication to drop the weight. It was a struggle, but I did it.
Do I hate exercising? Do I miss the Starbucks? Heck yes!
But I don't hate exercising or miss the Starbucks nearly as much as I enjoy not having Dunlap disease (where your gut has dun lapped over your belt)...

I don't feel sorry for the aforementioned in-law, due to the fact that she eats more than a teenage boy going through a growth spurt and washes it down with (at least) a two to three liters of Coke every day (sometimes more), yet she complains about her weight. A recent meal consisted of three tacos, a super burrito (about the size of a pee-wee American football) and three 12-ounce Cokes. In that same meal, I didn't finish a comparable burrito (after skipping breakfast!), and I have a large appetite. I have no problem with the fact that she's heavy, I have a problem with the fact that she complains about it while eating fourteen biscuits smothered in cream gravy (Southern-style, not British biscuits)...she may never be slim (and that's ok), but don't complain about your weight (or your related health problems) while you're not doing anything to fix the issue.

It also bothers me that she is on a taxpayer-financed healthcare plan (paid for by my tax dollars) while I pay through the nose for my health insurance...and she's living an extremely unhealthy lifestyle. I'll eventually finance her heart attack(s) and her diabetes treatments, all of which could be avoidable if she would just take care of herself. A person doesn't have to be slim to be healthy (as referenced by my friend described above), but to eat yourself into an unhealthy state is unnecessary.

I know this sounds harsh, and some people may say I'm being hateful or discriminatory against people with weight problems. Well, I'm not. I just saying that people who refuse to try to live a healthy lifestyle should not complain when that lifestyle jumps up and bites them in the butt...

I was watching some show last night about a 900lb Texas woman who did the same. She was so huge het left side fat rolls weighs more than my entire body. To her she did not eat allot, in my world what she ate for breakfast would have done me for a day at the very least. She had the surgery and about 3 weeks later she died also. They used a backhoe to lower the casket.

When they came to get her to bring her to the hospital they used a tow truck and a huge tarp and she looked like a beached whale. Whats really sad is that most if not all of these people are enabled by their families; they continue to feed them. This woman had a caretaker paid for by the state and all her food was also paid for by the state. People in this position say there is nothing that can be done; yes there is stop eating...

There are a couple of cases here that are causing outrage in the media. Two men who were both near 500lbs lost over 300 lbs each consequently leaving great rolls of flesh that had stretched so muc' that it couldn't rebound. These bags of flesh are now the source of infections and of course public ridicule. They both applied for cosmetic surgery and had letters from their family doctors and plastic surgeons stating that it was imperitive for health and psychological reasons The government has steadfastedly refuse to fund it dispite the fact that by loosing the weight they are probably saving the government countless thousands in future health costs by no longer being obese. The public outrage has been unrelenting because women who have had the same surgery have been covered and not one has been refused treatment. The government is passing it off as being no different than a nose job and says that's why they shouldn't be covered.I guess this will be bandied about until the next elections draw near and in their usual tradition they will grant the surgeries and pat each other on the backs saying what great caring humaniterians they are.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm a big guy. But I'm not big enough until my gut covers the little amigos down south. Then, and only then, will I lose some weight.

Just know if thats how you're gonna play it, for one thats massively obese, and also if you reach that point its a long hard road back.

My weight has always been one of those things I have always kept on top of. I refuse to get out of shape. Much easier to keep control now than bring yourself back.

Ah - phew! Thank you for that clarification. Without it it was the most shocking part of the whole thread to me! :D

Why does that stuff even exist? It comes with a list of horrible disbenefits and not a single plus point, far as I can see.

...Still. Apparently an ideal sponsor for the forthcoming Olympics. Hmm.

Cheers - C

After reading my initial draft, I realized that (British) biscuits with cream gravy sounded really, really nasty, so I edited the original statement. I will give female-in-law this much credit:  she at least eats good, tasty food...and Southern-style biscuits are a heavenly thing!

Do y'all have a similar food item?

Coca-Cola is good for dissolving the greasy grimy film that occasionally clouds up the windshield on the car (windscreen to you Brits)...other than that, not much.
I will admit a weakness for the occasional orange soda, especially the Mexican brand "Jarritos"...but that's less often than once a month.

Erm, I honestly don't know. I see Snowjoe on this thread; maybe he can say. Alternatively, we have a restaurant near me called The Texas Embassy - do you think it's the sort of thing they might offer? Maybe I need to go find out...

Related to which, right this moment at London's Olympic Park they are building the biggest McDonalds in the world, the yellow M being an official sponsor. It's a free world: nuttin' wrong with that. But I'm wondering if there might be weight-related confusions occuring when people take a break from watching the fittest human beings on the planet setting new records and go stuff their faces with mega doses of trans fat, sugar, salt and calorie laden food.

I wonder if in a hundred years time looking back they are going to be able to put their finger on where we're all going wrong at present...?

Cheers - C

It's mandatory until 11th grade, then you can choose one more elective, or continue PE via Weight room/Personal Fitness class.
