So Saturday morning I hear a horrible bang and my wife is screaming at the top of her lungs. She is in the living room and the rain is pouring into our house. After a quick assessment to make sure my wife is alright we quickly move all our furniture and stuff into the kitchen. This is what we woke to:

and my son's car:

With all the wind and rain a dead tree from the lot next door snapped and landed on us. It has taken us almost 3 days to get back to a scense of normalsy, but we are far from being back to normal. It took 2 days to get power back, a good portion of the food in the refrigerator went bad, carpet drenched, 8 or 9 holes in the ceiling, couch is ruined, ect...

Through all of this I am grateful that no one or no animal was hurt in all of this. My wife and dog were on the couch right under the ceiling where it fell. Everything else is small potatoes to me, my family is safe and that is all that truely matters.

Hi RK. Holy crap!

First thing; thank goodness no one was hurt. Most important.

By the look of that tree it has been ready to drop for a lo-o-o-o-o-ong time. Not good. Are you well insured? How do you get on with your neighbor?

Cheers - C

The lot next door is vaccant owned by a corporation, so don't really know them. There are 5 other trees ready to drop from that lot as well. We are decently insured, but have a bit of a deductable to meet. Just one crazy weekend.

RK, Glad everyone is ok...always the most important thing!

You might want to give that corporation a call and see if they will cover your deductable, they can only say no.

I'll go out on a limb and say that the people who own the neighbouring property are liable for all your damages.A situation similar to that happened not far from here a couple of years ago.A company had purchased a property with an old house on it,in the process of demolishing the house with an excavator the last wall of the house left standing fell into the neighbouring property destroying their fence and a shed containing thousands of dollars worth of tools, recreational watercraft, snowmobile and all kinds of other stuff you'd find in a shed. The company and the demolition company were found liable of all damages. If you make a claim on your insurance your premiums may go up even if you are not at fault or it may be held as a strike against you like it would with car insurance companies with accident forgiveness policies for the first at-fault crash.Anyway I hope that it all gets straightened out and I'm glad that nobody was hurt,as you said, that's the main thing.Best of Luck.

Gotta love that Texas weather. (That was a bit of sarcasm.)

With the drought I'd imagine that a lot of trees are going to come down now that we're starting to get storms again. I'm glad no one was hurt, that's the most important thing. :)

In the UK you're responsible for your own trees. If it falls on somebody / something you pay!
