I'm looking at amps, and I'm wondering what the main differences, aside from volume, are between the two (if any)? Would the Twin really be worth the extra $$$, or would I just be paying for volume that could easily be had by mic'ing the Deluxe?

Also, if I plan on making use of the natural overdrive via breakup, would the Deluxe be the more viable option in anything but an EXTREMELY loud stage setting? I want it to be able to stay clean at decently loud volumes, but also breakup not-too-far from there...

(start hyperbole font)You're going to have to be playing O2 Arena to achieve natural breakup on a Twin at a reasonable volume level...(End hyperbole font)

They're just too loud and clean...unless you pop out two of your power tubes or get a silverface/master volume Twin Reverb.

I say go Deluxe Reverb. Still plenty loud (and plenty clean), reasonably priced, great tone.

Of course, you can always get an overdrive pedal, use any amp on earth and not have to worry about destroying your ears and/or the ears of everyone within a two-mile radius... :P

Huh... well, with a bit of reading, I've learned that the Deluxe is my way to go, as the Twin simply IS NOT practical in weight, volume, or compatibility with distortion/OD before certain volumes, as SA said. In the age of PAs that DON'T sound like s***, the Deluxe should be able to do more than enough of what I need, whereas the Twin would simply be stunning pets, small children, and the elderly.

I'm pretty sure my mind is made up on the DRRI, but feel free to add your own input, I'd still very much appreciate it. :D

I gigged with my 100 watt master volume pull boost Twin almost exclusively for 30 years so here's my two cents. Pulling two power tubes on a Twin still leaves you with really loud amp that doesn't sound all that great. Using the master volume on a SF Twin again leaves you with a not so great sounding Twin. Twins sound great and take pedals really well, but, like you found out, they're really heavy, really clean and really loud.

A Deluxe Reverb, either reissue, SF or BF, might be the way to go.
Control of your stage volume is all part of being a professional. When I started out, P.A. systems were really lousy. We didn't mic much except for the drums. Our amps were big and powerful and we didn't wear ear protection. I'm paying for that now. My hearing is pretty damaged and I have Tinnitus in both ears.

I use nothing but small amps now. Anywhere from 5-30 watts.

After many years of struggling and making excuses for, and with inexpensive "Junk Amps". In the past year I bought a 65 Deluxe Reverb R.I. and it is comparatively wonderful. With a couple of distortion pedals A Dunlap Cry Baby / Fuzz Face / a Bad monkey & the little reverb pedal that comes with the amp. I'm ready for anything within reason, and at most any volume setting. In short I love it. Not to mention, nobody is giggling when they see it. 8) When you walk into a room carrying good equipment, from that point on it's all up to your own ability. No more excuses. 8)

Twin Reverb. This is not a joke. You can dime the volume and have zero output. It goes through the tone stack.

Turn all your tone knobs to 1 and your volume full up. Then add tone to taste. The volume comes up in sections. The 2-12 design and amazing TR tone sound sweet and full at low volume.

I'm not challenging your assertion, but I've never heard that before...are you referring to an original Blackface, Silverface, Silverface w/Master Volume or BF reissue (or all of them)?

Would that work with any amp with a tone stack?

...and what Fender models would this method work with?

Addendum: I'm admittedly ignorant on the way a "Tone Stack" works, so please educate me...I'm curious.
