Yes SITSOM is an interesting book.

I was especially amazed at the concert performances with Joan Osborne up front. It is said that due winter storms that some of the performers scheduled to appear couldn't make it into Detroit, but I'm glad Ms. Osborne did. The no-shows might explain why we see Bootsy Collins fronting several numbers. Her concert vocal on "What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted" is one of my favorite live versions of anything. If you are a Motown fan and you haven't seen it you should get it from Netflix or maybe find it in a bargain bin somewhere.

The discontinued spiral bound version of the book is better for sight reading purposes as it lays flat, so watch for that one maybe on eBay but know up front that they command premium prices due their relative scarcity. As you mentioned since many already know the songs SITSOM is a good way to learn sight reading.

I also found I had been playing more than one song incorrectly according to the transcriptions, which are very accurate by all accounts and not just by mine. It is important to know that many times store bought sheet music is not exactly like the recorded version because they are usually based on the original composition and not on the hit recording, but SITSOM is 99 to 100% correct because it is based on the recordings.

Another good book for bass clef sight reading training is "WHAT DUCK DONE" for exactly the same reasons. It is also available spiral bound. This one is authored/transcribed by Tim Tindall and is out of print, so it is about as hard to find as the spiral version of SITSOM. The difference between the first and second edition is that the 2nd edition added tabs to the standard notation.

Please explain the method used in the book. I am curious what makes it easy.
