Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Based on your continuing threads about the "new" sound and personnel, I would say that you are definitely obsessed with the "new" Van Halen.

But you don't seem to be winning very many converts...

Yep, he's pretty good at bass (When you have the best gear, probably the best bass teachers and an ideal practice environment, how could you not be?). It'll be fun to see what he does after VH.

I think people are torn about the whole "new" Van Halen scene...

It's great that Dave is back, but from everything I've heard (and what most people have said) the new songs range from good on down to "meh"...it's not bad, but it's not 1984 (album, not year) either. Overall, I've always liked Dave better than Sammy, but considering Eddie's ability to change his mind on a whim, it seems that most everybody is gun-shy about embracing the fact that Dave is back in the fold.

As for Wolfgang, I've been very impressed with the recent clips I've seen (much more impressed than what I saw a coiple of years ago. The kid's got chops and nobody should give him more or less credit just because he's got good genes or can afford the best gear or instruction. He's a pretty decent backup singer as well.

I think many people might feel the same way about Wolfgang vs Micheal as they do Bill Wyman vs Daryl Jones (in the Stones)...yes, Daryl's an excellent bassist, and he's got abilities nobody can deny...but he's not Bill. Bill was there (impassively and stoically :P ) through all the great classic albums and songs we all know and love, and it just doesn't seem right to have anybody different standing beside Charlie. Likewise, Micheal was there for all the albums (good, bad or otherwise) up until now, and it's hard to accept that VH has moved on...add the different backup vocal abilities (in any other band, Anthony would have been the lead singer) and it's a little harder still to accept.

I'll reserve total judgment on the whole album until after I have heard it, but if it's along the same lines as "Tattoo"... :|

Probably about the same as Sean Lennon.

Awsome bit of summing it all up there. This may be harsh to say but I wish Eddie was still a drunk. It was when he sobered up that things went to hell. He's a different man, now and he's doing an excellent job of completely spending all of his former credibility and totally messing up a great thing. Dave was a problem. Everyone could see that. They made the choice to go with Sammy and it was a great choice. They had their best years with him by FAR. Maybe he wasn't the virtuoso Dave was but the band overall thrived better with him than it did with Dave. Then Eddie sobered up and started telling everybody how to do their job and just generally ruining everything. If you read that 7 page article about how he redesigned his signature guitar then you got a perfect indication of how being a perfectionist is destructive to his collaborations with others. He burned a lot of bridges along the way while spending too many years making that guitar. When I look at the total carnage he has left behind, the used and abused people, the wasted time and effort all for his sense of perfection and then see how disappointing his so-called final product is I lose all interest in him whatsoever. I have written him off entirely. There was a time when he was going to go down in the anals of history as one of the greatest players the world had ever seen. He'll still be remembered well but he has tarnished himself indellibly. He is without my respect. Perhaps that doesn't mean much on the surface. After all, I'm just one guy but he should remember that I was once a pretty big fan and maybe he should look upon guys like me as an indication of the trend he has set for himself. There was no justifiable reason to oust Sammy or Mike. Eddie is a loser if he can't see that.

I went against my better judgement by posting this but SA unintentionally wrinkled it out of me.

BMW, thanks for taking the time to type all of that. You saved me the time of typing all that, but you said it better anyway. I still think Eddie should hire Axle Rose as the new lead singer for VH. Could be a match made in heaven, or not.

I could never get into VH neither EVH nor the band,as a matter of fact some songs such as "Jump" and "Panama" turned me off completely. There's no denying that EVH is a great guitarist but his playing just didn't come across to me or move me like that of a lot of other players.Like Malmsteen his playing lacks depth or emotion-at least to my ears.Am I the only one who feels this way about EVH?It seems that most people sing his praises and I can't remember seeing anyone write anything negative about him or the band.

I was never really a huge VH fan but to wish that Eddie was still a drunk, is just cruel.

You misunderstood my intent. I don't wish for anyone to suffer under addiction. That was not my point. My point was when he quit drinking he changed, for the better in terms of drinking and for the worse in terms of the band.
