I've been using a Delta Labs multi-effects pedal and after having it for 1 1/2 years I've gotten pretty good with programing it. I'd like to upgrade. I don't want to get into going through 50 boxes to build a pedal board. I don't have the time or inclination for that right now since I really don't know "my sound" yet.
The Tone Lab EX looks pretty nice. Anyone use one and have any feed back on it?
I have a nice Vox AD60VTX with the VC12 pedal board. But the jam night I'm playing at, I don't bring an amp. So having one compact pedal/effects box that I can plug in with one cord and power, is the way to go. It lets me have a couple nice presets, that lets my chosen guitar shine a little better than if I just plug into an amp I don't know very well. Also, I like being able to control volume between rhythm and lead, so the volume pedal is important to me.

I've heard good things about them. I went back and forth between this and the Boss GT-8 for a long time. After long consideration, and playing both of them, I ended up going with the Boss. It just seems to be more versatile. They both are pretty easy to use if you know pedals or multi-effects units. Both can use the wah pedal as a volume control, but the Boss also has a solo FX that you can attach to the patch which will automatically get you to the volume you want without trying to find the volume you're looking for. You just stomp and bam! start soloing with a higher volume. As I said, both are nice, but for me, the Boss had more ..... everything. Then again, I love Boss pedals and this thing gets the Boss pedal sounds and tones along with amp modeling. It sounds like VOX is your thing, so you may pick it over the Boss because that's "your brand." You won't go wrong with it either. It has great tone. Wish I could help more, but I ended up buying "the other" pedal.

As far as multi-effects go, I like them. I can get a lot out of one purchase. They're great for recording, and they do sound good. Do I own pedals? Yes. Have I sold most of my pedals? Yes, but I needed the money and I found that the Boss GT-8 was a better fit for me since I do more playing in my bedroom than I do elsewhere, plus, it's nice to throw some headphones on when everybody in the house is asleep. Don't let multi effects haters get to you. They'll always be there.

Never played the Vox but have heard good reviews about them. I have a Boss ME-50 that is a pretty solid performer. I'm personally moving towards individual pedals as I think they have more "character."

Recommend checking out the Boss models before you make your decision. They are very easy to use.

I haven't used a Tonelab as such but I have a Vox AD120VTH with the VC-12 Footcontroller that pretty well shares the same electronics and schematics in it's effects unit as the Tonelabs. The Vox effects are second to none and if you want to read reviews go on to the Vox forums and they have a whole section devoted to the Tonelab series. You'll find that the vast majority are thrilled with them.Their modulating effects like Uni-Vibe,Tremolo,Vibrato,phase shifter etc. are incredible and their echo and reverb sections are studio quality.Their amp models are also phenominal and are very true to the sound of the amps that they emulate. You can find the Vox forums here: http://www.voxamps.com/ the link to the forums is on the home page.

I'm thinking of the Tonelab EX because the controls look a lot like my Vox amp, so I think there'll be some similarities that will make it easier to use since I understand my amp pretty well. I was thinking of taking advantage of the Presidents Day sales, but I may wait.
I bought a set of Joe Bonamassa LE Signature pickups from SD this week, and I need to get a guitar to put them in, so maybe I'm gettin' a little crazy here.
Also, Vox has patch editing software for the ST, but not the EX. I'm not sure what's up with that, but I like to see support when I'm thinking of buying a product.

Hi Drew: we bought a Tonelab for my brother-in-law as a birthday present and I've played through it a good bit, so I have some experience in comparing it to my own old Boss GT-3 and also a Line6 Pod I've used a bit.

So I can confirm the widely held view that an important difference between Vox's units and other manufacturers' equivalents is that whereas most of them concentrate on getting the overdriven sounds Vox are distinctly better at emulating clean amp tones. So if your playing tends towards the clean-to-moderately-overdriven Vox may well be the one for you. And of course they are especially good at emulating the tones of their own amps, so those settings are particularly effective.

Whether the on-board valve/tube genuinely contributes to the tone these boxes put out is a contentious point. But to my ears the Vox units give very nice warm sounds, by the standards of sim generators.

The other thing you need to think about is whether you can run the particular chains of effects you need in combination or not. It wouldn't bother me, but the way Vox floor boxes are set up can rule out certain very over-the-top FX sequences, and if extremely highly processed sounds are your thing you just need to check out the possibilities on that before you buy. Probably not an issue for you, but be aware of it.

Still. I've a feeling this is likely the box for you. Enjoy!

Cheers - C

Thanks Ceri, that helps. One of the things I don't like about the Delta Lab is it gets over the top too easily. I'm not into heavy processing and am not looking to get discovered by a metal band. On the other hand, the one thing I like about the Delta Lab is it's small, compact and unobtrusive. Some of these boards I've been looking at are little cities.
But, I'm pretty sure a new pedal is going to have to be second behind a guitar to put my Bonamassa pups in. I can't imagine owning them and not be able to hear them.
