This is a letter I sent to Fender concerning a blatant manufacture's defect in my new American Special. I have called rhe local music store, and the $@!&#*% who owns it would not take it back, or give me any kind of credit or help. If you live in the Tidewater area, never go to Jeff's Guitars. His website is ejeffsguitars.com. Fender could easily solve this by just sending me a new body, but then that would be the easiest way and the best thing for me, the consumer, so why would they want to do that? Am I asking too much here?

Fender,
I must say I have had THE WORST customer service ever. From you, the only guitar and amps I buy! I purchased a new American Special Strat, and one of your workers drilled one hole for the tremolo retaining screws higher and at an angle than the other. Instead of doing the right thing, which would be to fill in the hole, the idiot simplay drilled another hole, but the second "good" hole partially contained the first hole, so now the tension of the tremolo is causing the screw to break away at the thin peices of wood and work its way into the original "bad" hole. Unfortunently, the local music store where I bought my guitar from does not accept returns. I have called your customer service two times, and I find it ironic because both times I was number fourth in line, and one of my friends also commented on how when he called he was fourth also. The person I spoke to said I could take my guitar to "FretNotGuitar Repair" located in my hometown of Newport News, VA. Only the owner siad she no longer accepts the Fender Warranty, and the other chump I spoke to said I would now have to take it all the way to Richmond, a full two hours ONE WAY. I cannot beleive Fender does not make sure there are people who accept the warranty in a resonable driving distance of where your guitars are sold. So even if the guitar is new and comes with a warranty, it is basically useless and crap if you have to drive four hours there and back just to fix a problem that someone in your factory was too damn lazy to fix in the first place. And when I spoke and emailed you, NOT ONE did ONE person say "Sorry about that". NOT ONCE! I am completely turned off with how your company has handled this, and I am seriously considering never buying a Fender anything ever again

Try calling Winter Sound in Gloucester, VA. Jim might be able to do something for you. They are Fender Authorized. 804-642-6434. It's not a mile on the other side of the Coleman bridge.

I must add that Jeff's, the slimy music store where I bought the guitar from, does not have a return policy. So I guess the moral of the story is don't ever buy if the store won't take it back...

They are both owned by Jeff, the one on Warwick near Hilton is the store where all of the trade ins for new guitars go. Jeff's on Mercury Blvd. is the store where all the NEW guitars are sold, and where I had the misfortune to go and buy my "perfect" Fender. Please don't ever go to either store, I really hope he goes out of business. But Mike that works in the Mercury location is a great guy, its just Jeff, the owner who is a complete shithead..

I know some of us bad mouth Guitar Center, but GC would give a refund in a case like this... no doubt.

An even better vendor for customer service and returns in MUSIC123.com, they are the best IMHO.

Also, if you ever use American Express to purchase guitars (or other items), you can dispute the charge... That causes a huge headache for the shop owner, and then he will have no choice but to give you a refund.

Actually, I purchased an Ibanez guitar from GC that had multiple problems that cropped up well after the exchange period, but well within the warranty period (the frets sprouted very, very badly, the locking nut stopped sitting in one place due to cheap, fresh wood, and the cheap locking pads wore out quickly rendering the guitar useless for its advertised purpose) -- GC blamed Ibanez manufacturing, but Ibanez called it normal and refused to do anything -- GC did nothing but keep the money! I sold the guitar back to GC for a huge loss -- I couldn't sell it outright without disclosing the defects, so I cut my losses and moved on.

I won't purchase anything new from GC and I'll never, ever touch another Ibanez, and I will always grind them GC hard when selling them a used guitar...I got 85% of the cash value of the last guitar I sold to them, 75% on the two guitars I sold them before that -- yo yo!

You know I never volunteered to be a GC apologist, but I guess I am going to have to defend them...

Guitar Center didn't do anything wrong here... No guitar vendor is going take back a guitar when the return period has expired... I think you can chalk that one up to bad luck...

Why the hell would you sell a used guitar back to Guitar Center ? Its like selling it back to a pawn shop or any other brick and mortar store that makes a profit off of buying and selling used gear. If you are getting more than 50% of the cash value of any item in this manner, you are doing good... Selling used gear to GC or a Pawn Shop is simply financially foolish... Try craigslist or ebay... much better option...

Sucks to hear about your experience. I personally wouldn't do business with anyone that had a no return policy. I question anyone that can't stand behind the product they sell.

On a separate note. Why DOES everybody seem to bash GC? I've never had a bad experience with them. Knock on wood.

I bought an amp from them once. After a week at home with it I decided I didn't like the way it sounded. They took it back, no questions asked and refunded my money.

When I bought my American Special from them, I found Best buy had the same axe, same price a week later and was also offering a free wah pedal with the purchase. I took the ad into the store and they matched it by giving me a free wah. A better one than what BB was offering btw.

Maybe I've been lucky but I have to say I have been thoroughly please with my local GC.

So I gotta know, what's up with the bashing? Not looking to pick a fight, just would like to be enlightened.

I hate to sound like a dick, but you didn't get screwed. You just didn't read the fine print or inspect your guitar before buying.

Not really seeing how the tremolo is being covered by the trem cover, the only way to spot this would be to take the trem cover off, something I do not think music stores would be comfortable with the buyer doing(might leave some scratches). But themain point I am trying to make is that I bought a $@!& Fender, and Fender is not owning up to it. I had an expierince where a pair of pants I bought ripped a year after I bought them, and I called the company and they shipped a new pair right away, free of charge. I don't see why Fender can't send me a new body, that's all I'm aking for, so THEY can fix THIER problem.

Also, I'm sure most medium to high end guitar stores would show you themselves if you asked. It isn't too big of a deal to remove a few screws.
