what's the trick to learnin' solo's?
I'm teachin' myself, and I must say, since I got my telecaster, I've gotten better,
it's not the guitar, the guitar's just steel and wood. It's me, I've played more, and the strings are easier to manipulate on an electric,
but, what's the trick to learnin' solo's and stuff, I can kinda pick at chords, but not real well,
right now, I'm wantin' to learn Blessed Hellride by Black Label Society,

anywho, how'd you learn to play solo's?
Thanks,Tessa♥

practice,practice practice!

that is your first and most important tool. learning scales will help. maybe some lessons even.

one thing about learning songs is to learn easy ones first. then take it to the next level, and soon you'll be where you want to be.

i have been playing since 1960. i still play at least an hour a day-practice just makes you better

yeah, I practice, alot, not as much as I should, I know, but I play in the morning before I go to school if I have time, I've begun bringing my guitar with me every once in a while, and I play when I get home after homework, if I have time, sometimes by the time I get done with homework, it's 10n or 11 o'clock and everyone's asleep.
like I said, I can pick a few songs like chord-wise. I can play a simplified version of Hotel California and a simplified version of Stairway To Heaven, but I'm still confused on the solo's.
I know lesson's could help. I do, but I'm a little too stubborn for my own good, I want to fully and completely teach myself how to play. A little advice or a simple tune here and there from a friend is fine, but yeah. I'm too stubborn, I know.

Well, if you write your own songs, and write your own solos, you can be good at everything you play. I find it harder to play something someone else wrote.

You need to learn scales and progressions. Practice a lot. This will help you create solos.

You can learn the song/solo from Youtube videos, sheet music, or tabulature. Again this will take a lot of practice and patience, especially if are not familiar with scales and progressions. Start slow and keep playing without mistakes all the way through. Once you can play the solo without errors, then work on tempo until at the right speed and rhythm.

Tessa, G'day. You can get those fingers walking today by learning the Pentatonic scale. This will lead to many things.
That's the trick

Goodonya ....Mark.

Scales, scales and more scales. Learn them, memorise them. As someone else as suggested a good starting point is the Minor Pentatonic, I'd also recommend the Blues minor and the Major scales.

Then just play what you feel, YouTube is great for leaning by rote and copying but it'll never make you a lead player. Learn a little theory!

All of the above and, know the song before you try to play it. There's a difference between listening to and hearing a song. Spend a lot of time with a song you want to play. If you're trying to play by ear, that's pretty much your only choice.

Now that you have a teacher, learn to read music.

Most important thing of all, have fun!

Listen to the solo until you can play it in your head then learn it one measure at a time. Trying to learn a solo all the way through can be hard so take it slow. Learn the first measure until you have it down, then move to the second measure. Once you have the second one link the first two measures. Then learn the 3rd, etc. If you find a measure that's hard don't worry about skipping over it, you can come back later. If you get fustrated you might give up. Take the time to figure out which fingering work best for you, sometimes just changing how you play it helps make it easier. For fast licks you might want to invest in a program like Amazing Slow Downer.

It's probably easiest to start out simply playing note for note. Get the tabs to the version you want to play. Ultimate Guitar has a lot of them. Start by playing slowly. Work up the speed. A lot of the timing and overall feel won't come till later.

You can also do it by finding a youtube vid of someone playing it with a close enough shot of the guitar to figure out what they're doing. Rip the vid with something like "Keep It". Then you can replay the vid at slower speeds.

backing tracks. find some you like and experiment. most are recorded in standard tuning. i've improved my solos alot just by jamming with backing tracks in different keys.
you tube is great. practice as much as you can.

Long been a fan of that great American mid-late 20th century philosopher, Frank Zappa. He had two rules to becoming a better picker.

1. Shut up and play your guitar

2. Shut up and play your guitar some more

Best of fortune!
