well today i've been run of my feet , a spot of car maintenance in bloody cold conditions , make dough for pizza's for the family dinner and get the neck glued onto the body of the 57 -59 Hofner president , this was all before noon  , so anyway , i got it glued up and set for angle and also gave the whole guitar a right good clean (it's been in a loft/attic for more than 40 years , it was also thick with nicotine , ) i ended up using autoglym super resin polish to clean it up :D i think it came up pretty damn sweet myself considering it's at least 53 years old  here are a few pics of my handywork :D

What kind of glue do you use to glue a neck on? Is that all it uses to stay on? it would need to be strong glue! i always thought the same whenever people talk about Les Paul's as well, they're glued in necks. is there something else to reinforce the join like a special joint in the wood or something? it's just over years you can't imagine just glue being strong enough? It must be tho' cos Gibson has been gluing them since time began.

So cool I can't say. A guitar that shows his history and is still playable, you are a lucky man Alan.

thanks for the kind words guys , it's appreciated , i've still a few things to sort out on her , i need to re-solder a few of the sliders back to the base plate and clean off some coachwork paint someone put on to cover up the last botched attempt at re-setting the neck (sometime in the early 60's , according to the last owner )
Gorgon , the neck join on this old guitar was nothing special , no dovetail type join , just a straight slot in job . Originaly it would have been held in place by eurea formaldahyde glue (animal parts glue) but for some reason early in it's life it's suffered a neck disjointing for lack of a better word  and for resetting the neck i had to use trusty old epoxy resin , the neck and body havn't been kept in the best of conditions so there was quite a difference in size between the pocket and the neck sizes , the only way to overcome this (without shimming the pocket , which would have looked crap  ) was epoxy , i will try to get a bit of plastic to match the binding around the pocket , but that's for another day :D , cheers
Alan
This old guitar has found new life (probably lucky as hell it landed in my hands 8) ) i will look after it and it will be a player 8) and it's most definately a great conversation piece 8)
Claude , thanks man , and i am indeed very lucky to have been given this piece of history
And just incase anyone is wondering who is in the photo with Alex harvey , it's Tommy Steel :D

That's a beautiful artifact from the early days of rock and a great job of refurbishing Alan. Wasn't a Hofner President one of George Harrison's early guitars? I recall reading in the Beatles Gear book that either he or John had a President in the early days.
