Not recording professionally and not getting too serious about it. For now, just wanting to record and see how it's like for fun, was wondering, is this a decent way to record?

1) Connect 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch adapter ( http://www.americanmusical.com/ProductImages/Large/p22014.jpg ) to my Roland Micro Cube Amp.
2) Connect 1/8 inch to 1/8 inch cable ( http://www.frontx.com/pro/c217_054p2.gif ) that connects the amp to the my window XP computer.
3) Download Audacity for free and open it up and start recording.

QUESTION
1) Just bought the Roland Micro Cube Amp, anyone ever use this amp to record? how is it?
2) For the 1/8 inch to 1/4 adapter and 1/8 inch to 1/8 cable, in terms of record sounding, any should work well as long as they're the correct inch and fits right? In other words, when recording, is it right that eventually the sound quality still mostly depends on your guitar and amp not the connections in between?
3) For WindowXP PC, is there a recording program that's better than Audacity and it's free?

Yes all the steps listed should work for recording. Just watch your record levels, too high of levels will cause digital clipping, which will cause distortion.

1) I've never recorded with a cube.

2) Use the 'Line-in' on your soundcard, than in Audacity select 'Line-in' as the record source.

3) I use Reaper http://www.reaper.fm/ for PC recording, which isn't really free ($60), but the evaluation version of REAPER is complete and uncrippled.

With Reaper (or any DAW) I recommend an external USB audio device, like the Roland DUO-CAPTURE: USB Audio Interface http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/roland-duo-capture-usb-audio-interface/h72397000000000 ($80), which comes bundled with Cakewalk SONAR X1 LE DAW. SONAR X1 LE http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/SONARLE/feature.aspx/About-SONAR-LE, is a really powerful DAW.

I agree with Tony. Sure it will work, but you won't have that digital conversion
to make it sound better (unless you're using a PCI soundcard?).
