just heard that van halen is coming to detroit 8) ....and the opening act is:

"kool and the gang" :?

don't get me wrong, just doesn't seem to me like they would fit on the same bill.

got me thinking- have you ever been to a concert where the opening act does not fit on the bill? i like van halen, but if i'm late for the opening act, i won't lose sleep over it

It's a bit odd, but it's not like the Jimi Hendrix Experience opening for the Monkees back in '67. That had to be weird.

Last year Weezer was here, one of my favourite current bands, but they were opening for the musical shitshow that is the Black Eyed Peas.

Strangely promoter lost a ton of money after poor sales.

What I kind of perversely enjoy is when the Opening Act is so freakin' good that the Main Act pales in comparison. I've seen this happen a few times and it's really bad when the Main Act takes the stage and knows they've been one-upped right out of the gate. :|

Back in the Fall of 1978 Van Halen opened for Boston at a stadium concert I attended. It was an unfortunate choice for Boston.  By the time Eddie, Alex, Micheal, and David got thru Boston was a yawn. It was ironic because Van Halen was a brand new act and were only just beginning to get airplay on the radio.

The opening song was "Running with the Devil". When the bass and drum started on the intro Roth came out with white bellbottoms and no shirt doing front flips, and flying roundhouse kicks. My first thought as I tried to get my heart to quit beating to Anthony's bass line was what are they smokin? I want some...Then Eddie polished off the opener with "Eruption" which caused my lower jaw to unhinge itself from my skull. (At the time I probably knew 5 chords because thats all I needed to play CSN&Y, Jerry Jeff Walker, or John Prine.) Next came "Ain't Talkin Bout Love", "Atomic Punk", and "Jamie's Crying". At some point they did a cover of Martha and the Vandellas "Dancing in the Streets". I was really liking them until Roth did "Ice Cream Man" because my girlfriend along with 90% of the female attendees had a collective orgasm. Roth worked the crowd like a seasoned pro which by then he was after all those years of practice on the Sunset Strip. Obviously the band made quite an impression on me because I can still remember those details in spite of the altered state of mind I was in at the time... :( ... Oh yeah... I vaguely remember Boston and "More than a Feeling"... but it was more of an afterthought. :D

Interesting coincidence of sorts. When I saw Boston headlining at the Garden (Madison Square, that is) in I believe it was 1975, Sammy Hagar's band opened for them. Hagar acted like the audience came to only see him. He was booed off the stage during his third song.
