I read this comment on YouTube and wanted to know if it's true or not: "it should be noted that all coiled cords will roll your highs off and up the mids. so it will modify the sound of your guitar. they where primarily used for funk because of this. so be warned of the metal and alternative defeating coil cords if that's your thing."

I guess it's true. Fender sells a coiled cord and it says basically the same. I've been playing with a coiled cord for years (free w/ amp purchase). 8)

interesting article here about it. I gather most modern coiled cables are higher quality and just mimic the look of the vintage ones, but to some degree i guess they would have the same effect of dulling some of the highs.

I wonder if it's because of the overall length, a 10' coiled cord is probably 30' when stretched out.

I noticed this years and years ago and have never used a coiled cord since :( Shame because they are great for practicing at home where you don't want long cables everywhere. Now if they made a coiled cable that kept all your high end and punch i'd be on it in a flash!

Coiled cords way back were really noisy, but cool looking. They would pick up all kinds of static and acted as antennas. I've tried some of the new ones and wasn't that impressed with them either. I've been spoiled by the new cord technology. I'll stick with my George L's.

+1 on George L's - - I haven't seen or used a coil cord in over 20 years at least.

'Zactly. They're crappy, but a total style statement, if worn correctly.

Yeah  Once in a while way back in the local clubs, you'd see somebody trip and fall. LMAO
But you had to have that springy cord. I still have a Whirlwind that is part coiled and about six feet of straight cord on it. They just suck all way round.

Hee-hee - who amongst us has not at one time or another made a silly move and suddenly found ourselves flat on our back gasping for breath and gazing up at the bass player laughing his face off? :D

In my neighborhood the real big baggy pants were in style, I mean the really big ones that could house a family of four in them. This kid was getting off the school bus and fell right on his arse. The stuff we do when we're young.

I used coiled cords for about 15 minutes back in the late 60s,I didn't find any difference in tone but because of their ability to get tangled very easily I stopped using them even though they looked cool-so I thought at the time.

Vaguely remember that phenomenon of coils "sounding different."

Been using Planet Waves Circuit Breakers for a long time. Not inexpensive, but THE best for this use; on/off switch and high quality, that's the ticket....

Yep, 2nd or 3rd time you plugged in they'd start to crackle. Sometimes I'd turn the wrong way and everything would go dead until I moved again. Had white ones and black ones.

They must make them better today. Hey, if they're good enough for GearManDude . . . 8)
