There is a really good feature in the March issue of Vintage Guitar mag. There's an in depth interview with Bill Wyman-the Stones' original bass player. In the article Bill confirms what some other forum members and I have been saying for ages:The Stones were Brian Jones' creation and he was the leader and it was him that chose the bands repertoire.I haven't finished the article yet so I don't know if he gets into the dirt about how Keith and Mick wrestled control from him but you can gather something about the way that he said it that he wasn't too impressed with Keith and Mick.He states unequivocally that Mick and Keith weren't the leaders as many people on this side of the pond thought and he stated that British musicians all knew the difference.BTW ironically in this issue too Keith gets inducted into the VG Hall of Fame.

Would be interesting to know what Keith has to say on the subject.

I am part way through Keith's autobiography Life and up to where I am he hasn't said anything about Brian much at all.I would imagine that whatever he has to say he would probably try to whitewash what really happened. It was his and Mick's takeover that lead to his demise anyway,he got pushed to the sidelines and started his downhill spiral.

Most interviews I've seen of Keith, he's a genuinely nice guy but Mick is a different guy. Even though they dont seem to get along I've never heard Keith bad mouth Mick. Not sure about the other way around.

Holy ShiQ I forgot about that fiasco,he ended up marrying an 18 year old I believe,I guess that he figured out that "robbing the cradle"was wrong.

The 18-year-old you mentioned was the same girl (Mandy Smith). They were in a relationship for several years; he married her when she was 18 or 19 and they divorced less than two years later. What's almost (but not quite) as sick is the fact that her mother approved of the whole setup!

An even weirder part of the story was the fact that Wyman's son Stephen started a relationship with Mandy's mother...and they were closer in age than Wyman and Smith.

He's a great bass player, historian and author, but man...how did he think that was ok?

I've got that sitting on the shelf waiting the read. We old farts know the beginnings of that band 'cuz we've watched it evolve through its various incarnations. The fault dear Brian was not in your stars but in yourself. His stage presence was for naught and with Jaggar dancing and prancing in the foreground on vocals, while Richards handled all the serious guitar work, dreary old Brian was literally a 'nowhere man.' Had he lived, we may have eventually found him outside looking in. Hell, Mick Taylor ran circles around Brian with his guitar virtuosity even though he nary moved a muscle.
