I bet the 1/2 step down on two strings gets pretty confusing.

I was playing bass in a band a few years back, and with only one bass, I didn't feel like tuning to drop-d for half the songs, and going back up to standard for the other half, so I tuned my low-b on my 5-string up to D, so I had a DEADG tuned 5-string.
It confused the heck out of musicians who were watching me.

2 1/2 steps down??? Whoah Chet, you must have a light touch.

My acoustic is standard. My strat is a 1/2 step down.

I'm pretty sure he meant #2- 1/2 step down

Tuning lower just means that you sometimes have to get bigger strings to not get the 'spaghetti' feeling with the strings.

Oh yeah, oops, sorry about that Chet, it sure did look like 2 1/2 steps. That dash sure would've made a difference, hehehehe.

Sorry about that.
It has been corrected.

I guess the majority of us keep at least one standard and one 1/2 step down.

Is there any preference to fingerboard? My 1/2 down is rosewood, and standard is maple. Yours?

Mine are all Rosewood. I don't own a guitar with a Maple fretboard.

I moved all my strings down one position discarding my 6th string. Replacing the now 4th string with a wound 3rd. Using a tenor A for the first string and then tuning it to standard pitch. This makes every string tuned a lot looser then normal.

My tunings:

#1: Standard
#2: 1/2 step down

I have both maple and rosewood boards on my Fenders, it makes a difference but I actually haven't been bothered to pick or choose based on that; the guitar itself is what I reach for, not just for the fingerboard.

I once read that Billy Gibbons did some songs on a album (I forget which) where he had a LP guitar tuned DOWN to A, with big gauge strings. If you're him, I suppose you can get it away with it. I don't think I could.

I'm not sure, but I'd guess that's what he did on Rythmean and probably Dreadmon Boogaloo from XXX.

When I saw ZZ Top for thier Mescalero tour, Billy used one Guitar, his Billy Bo, and tuned it on the fly. An amazing feat to witness. He'd go from Standard to Open G in the blink of an eye, with no tuner. He'd get "The Nod" from his Stage-Side sound man (who apperently did have a tuner) and away he'd rip. For the Whack Atack tour he had a Green Billy Bo, and the last tour he used several guitars. Green , Red, and Black Billy Bo's, and a Gold Top Les Paul. And of course Dusty had his Custom Upsidedown Fender Bass'.

I think you're right, I really like both those albums, all of ZZ Top's stuff, actually (even the ones with synth on them). 'Loaded' is just so wrong it's right!

Every Album has a personality all it's own. Recycler is one of my Favorites, even Doubleback, but I really like their strange stuff. The Rev. has some wicked grooves.
