A friend of mine said that he has a damaged LP. He said his cat knocked it off of the stand and cracked the neck near the headstock. I'm unsure of how bad the damage is or whether it's an Epi or Gibson. But, I think it would make for a great project, considering he needs a guitar, and I like to mess around with stuff. I'll post pics if I decide to get it.

A broken neck on a Les Paul isn't something to "mess around with",it takes a good luthier to mend it correctly,oh yeah, you could fix it maybe, but how well?...hold on to your Strat.

Why do you think I'm doing a damage assessment before I pop on it? He's most likely bringing it to school tomorrow. If it's too damaged for me to even consider, I'm staying with it. If it's a single crack, I'll bring out the skills I was taught in woodshop. I like to be hands on with learning, and I want to be able to get into fixing/building more. But seriously, if it's a minor crack, I'll try it. I'm not going to be an idiot and buy something that's been obliterated.

How will you know the degree of the damage without taking it to a pro. I don,t think you learned that in woodshop. I don,t want to see you get stuck with a piece of dodo.

Sounds like all the love and excitement has gone out of your Strat build if you'd trade it for a busted guitar... :|

Well, if it isn't how he described it (slightly cracked) then it's a no go. To be honest it the probability that I'll buy it is lower than I'm making it sound. One, if it's one of the Specials with the bolt on neck, I won't do it. I'll probably pay him like $30 for the good parts and resell for a slight profit. Two, if the neck is in worse shape than he's making it sound. I'll not do the trade. See "One" for what I'll do.

To be honest, I'm not feelin' it. I love the neck, it fits my hand perfectly. It just feels a bit off to me. (The whole rest of the guitar)

Can you get some pictures of the break to post here. Sometimes, what looks to be a minor split can end up being a much bigger undertaking.

Its pretty simple to fix a broken LP headstock. Very common and when repaired is stronger than ever.

This is why they break. See how thin it gets?

Check this out Nevin...the new Greco line of LP's have the truss rod setup same as Fender.

Maybe you could still make it work - turn it into a Steinberger! Who needs a headstock anyway?

I'd never even consider it. They look like they'd be horribly off balance. Plus, tuning at the bridge looks like a pain in the $@!.
