In the mid 70's, two guys in a local high-school band each had Strats. One was tobacco brown, and the other was all ash. The ash guy was a lefty, but played a right handed guitar upside down (without altering the right handed stringing).

Inspired, I really wanted a Strat of my own but could not afford the expense. On a routine visit to my local mom and pop music shop in 1975, I saw a honest to goodness FENDER Telecaster hanging on the wall for $250. On the plus side, it was the real-deal. On the negative side, someone had done a crappy job of carving out a belly cut. Didn't show from the front, so I didn't care much.

Previously, I had played a cheapo japanese SG copy through a Princeton Reverb. That amp was a whole 'nuther story. My dad gave me that on Christmas of '74, so I had the amp before I had the tele.
