I learned to play guitar on my dads 1957 Stratocaster. Sunburst with original case. I was familiar with this guitar from the mid 60's. My first personal Fender was a 1969 Precision natural color rosewood and tortoiseshell. very road worn. The next Fender was a bullet bass USA long scale model I had for a time. Sunburst. Next a 98 USA precision in Candy Apple red/rosewood and a Mexican Precision 89 I think in Wine red/rosewood. A Squire Jagmaster Japan model Sunburst and a white Squire affinity Strat for a short time. Rosewood both. I have had 2 teles, a Blackout 3 PU tele and a cream color one (maple board) these both Mexican made teles. Now I own a 2010 American Jazz Deluxe 5 string "Sunburst again" and a deluxe players strat Sunburst of course. I have and love a Les Paul too so it's not all about Fenders.

What's your Fender history?

No more Les Paul... Traded for a VG Strat (always wanted one) and a Line 6 pod board. So now a VG strat. Black/maple AND a Mexi P bass Black/rosewood, AND a BXR 200 bass amp scored for $150 and now a Fender super 60 guitar amp scored for $250 with brand new extra tubes in the box and the footswitch. (the input jacks are ok not bad) There's the long gone fender amps I mentioned in another post here. Fender blackface bassman 2x12 & head and BXR 300 combo bass, A silverface champ for a time,

The VG (First generation) is amazing, not perfect in every way but in many ways good to perfect. The G tuning I am using right away The Baritone too, The drop D, 12 string and tele bridge settings are amazing. If you set acoustic/12string/top blade switch position, It sounds exactly like the intro to "Wish you were here"

The new VG is out by Roland/Fender and has a few changes. Notably the acoustic models are more defined with a Nylon string, Jazz box, Sitar, Dobro, and regular dreadnought. The 5 way switch on twin pickup modelling has more options for wide range pickups on tele or humbucker. When properly adjusted for pickup height the tracking is great.

Having started with an acoustic from Sears and then a $25 fleamarket find (Telstar, I think, kinduva Strat-like thing) I graduated to my first good guitar- a '71 Tele, black/maple with an aftermarket D'Armond Humbucker up top. $150 (in 1975 dollars) with the case. Later picked up a '70ish Jazz Bass- 'burst/tortoiseshell, w/case, same price. Got rid of both when I hit college/work and stopped playing (wanna talk regrets?).
Got the bug again in the late '90s, and picked up a Plus Deluxe Strat, Clear Crimson/maple. Guess the bug passed, 'cause that one went- if memory serves- towards a bar tab. Never said I was a genius...
Bug bit again- for real, this time, I think- early last year, and I grabbed up an '06 Epi Dot Studio that I saw while prowlin' around for a Tele- too good a deal to pass up, even if it's from those other guys. Actually a real nice guitar, especially for the price.
Played the Dot enough to to feel justified in ordering a new Deluxe Player Strat, honeyblonde and maple- gotta see her, folks, the pics don't do her justice- which I got abut a month ago, complete w/a bad neck pup. Love it, and prob'ly will even more once it's set right.
May have to add to this history if work picks up and that Daphne Blue Classic '50s at 30th St. Guitars keeps screaming my name...

My Fender history starts with a Kramer Striker.
It was the summer of 1989. I was getting ready for my senior year in high school and starting in the ninth grade up to that point, I had been playing and old Tiesco electric given to me by my uncle and a Stella Harmony acoustic that my grandfather played.

I saw an ad in the classifieds for a Kramer Striker. I wanted it and my folks wrote a check for part of the amount and I covered the other part. I drove with my uncle 2 hours to Little Rock and went to the kid's house. Turns out, he wouldn't take the check. Luckily I had relatives that lived in Little Rock and owned businesses...however, they didn't have the money on hand to cash the check. At the time I didn't have a checking account anywhere, so it was impossible to find a bank that would cash it, either.
As a last ditch effort, my uncle says that he knows someplace we can go. To his credit, he wasn't going to let me go home empty handed.

The Kramer was pretty much a wash at this point, but we decided to give Boyd's Music a try. Thankfully, my uncle did the talking for me. Bob Boyd (being the extremely cool guy he was) said, "Hey, I got no problem with a check. We'll take it." So in a few short minutes, he brought out a black and white MIJ Squier...the one with the System I tremolo on it. "I think this will fit your price range perfectly." He plugged it in, and let me play it. Even though I had no experience with a decent electric guitar at that time, I knew that guitar was coming home with me. And it did. As Bob rang us up, he threw in a Kramer (I know, right?) gig bag and some picks in the front pocket of the bag ("You can put your sandwiches in there, too.", Bob says as he hands me the instrument).

That was twenty four years ago.

I came to understand with playing the instrument that the middle pickup was not a stock pickup and it sounded unusually thin and tinny when paired with the bridge pup. But I loved that guitar and wore it constantly around the house no matter what I was doing (save taking a bath).

When I started college, one year I decided (like a lot of bone headed college kids do) that I would take my student loan refund and buy a new instrument. I went to the music store in the Pine Bluff mall and walked out with a 1995/96 Lake Placid Blue MIM Standard Strat with a maple neck AND a MIM P Bass with a Rosewood neck and the "black label" on the headstock. I also got a free Peavey practice amp and a Fender deluxe gigbag out of the deal as well.

I gave my Squier to my little brother to learn on (who, by the way, is an exponentially better guitarist than me). He didn't take quite as good of care than I did, but I'm glad he didn't completely trash the guitar. I was able to get it back with a few parts missing and a few parts needing to be refurbished/replaced. One of these days, I'm going to take it to a luthier and get an estimate on what it's going to take to get it back to playing status again, but again, most of the original parts are still there.

A couple of years ago, I bought a Fender Mustang II amp...and well, those of you who have one of these things knows that I don't have to say much of anything about it except, "Wow."

So that's pretty much my Fender history. I know it was rather long winded, but sometimes the best stories are.

My Fender history is short.

From 1960 to 1965 I owned an 4 guitars; Alamo, Hoff, and 2 Hofner. Bought my 1962 Jazzmaster in a music store in El Paso, TX in 1965.

My first amp was a Sears Silvertone with a 12" speaker in 1961. In 1970, I bought a silverface Fender Bandmaster Reverb amp and cabinet with two 12" speakers. Later in 1970, I started playing bass and put 15" Fender bass speakers in my Bandmaster cabinet.

Bought my first bass in 1970, a Fender Coronado and in 1978 traded it in on a Fender Precision Bass.

In 1976 I traded in my Bandmaster/Reverb and got a silverface Showman/Reverb amp (built in 1968), currently needs a hum fixed.

I bought a Fender F250 acoustic at a swap meet in 2000.

Basically haven't played since 1983 until my 11 year old grand daughter expressed a desire to learn to play. So, I pulled all my stuff out of the closets and bought her a Chinese Squire Strat kit for Christmas. I am trying to teach her chords and learning how to play all over again because I forgot everything I ever knew. :D

I still own and love all the Fender products in my signature.

Jerry

Let's see...

My first good bass was a new 1992 Black Fender JP90

after that: *I should point out all of these had rosewood fingerboards and were 4 stringers

1974 badly refinished in natural with green sparkles Precision Bass
1994 New Fender Stratocaster American Standard in Red
1995 New Fender American Standard Precision in Black
1978 Fender Precision in black primer with Dimarzio's and Leo Quan bridge
1994 Used Fender Jazz Plus 4 string, vintage white
2003 New Fender Highway One Jazz in blue
2007 New Fender American Series Precision in butterscotch
1995 Used Fender American Standard Precision in vintage white
2009 New Squier Classic Vibe Precision 60's in Blue

Which one was best? I think the vanilla/vintage white 1995 American Standard Precision took the prize for fit and finish...with the most sustain/lack of dead spots. The Squier Classic Vibe would be 2nd to that. The Jazz Plus was great, too. Which were duds? The Highway One and the American Series.

Will I own another Fender? Not likely.

I forgot to mention in my previous post my Fender amp history. In addition to my 8 Fender guitars I also have a 1969 Bassman Amp and a 1968 2-15 Bassman cabinet with the "driprail" trim around the grille.Up until a few months ago I had a Limited Edition Blonde Blues Jr. but I sold it back in December so I could but a Vox AC-15.The Blues Jr. was a great amp and I loved the tone and everything about it but where I'm such a Beatles Freak and the AC-15 was at such a good price,I had to get it.The Blues Jr. hasn't gone far as I sold it to my buddy, forum member Blinkers and I got dibs on it if he ever goes to sell it.

Haha! Guitslinger I used to play through a (borrowed) Baseman w/2-15 cabinet. It was a mother to haul around, but we were young and didn't care. I loved it because it was the only electric guitar, (base) in the band!! I was a hot item!

Always loved Strats for some reason, but always played acoustic. Finally got my Mexi about 6 years ago. What fun! What a great playing and sounding axe! Oh and it looks good too!

Peace,
Gridlok :)

My first Fender guitar was a Duo Sonic bought with the help of my dad in the early 60's. In 62 bought a Fender Concert amp. In 63, having graduated high school and with a real job, I was able to buy my dream guitar, a sunburst Stratocaster. In 67, while in the service (later to regret), traded in my Strat to buy a Fender Coronado II Antigua. I also bought a sunburst Coronado XII (12-string). That same year, I acquired a 67 Bandmaster amp. In 2009, needing an amp easier to move around the house, I picked up a Frontman 25R. Last year I sold the Coronado XII and also bought a 2012 Stratocaster American Special two tone sunburst. I still have the Concert and Bandmaster, and, Coronado Antigua. I guess today, those two amps and the Coronado are considered vintage. That is my Fender history, though I also have a couple electric-acoustics that had been what I played the most over the years until I bought my Stratocaster last year.

My history w/ Fender gear is as follows, after a prelude. I was a hunting and fishing kid from about 5yo-on, as such I owned rods/reels and guns. Then I joined the Army and they gave me an M16/M60/M2 and many more toys so I sold my guns(at a pawn shop-no less) and gave away my rods/reels. After basic, ait and jump school I found out I was headed to Ft Riley, KS.
I didn't have much time on my feet as a private; spent more time on my hands if you know what I mean, front lean and rest position move...... after getting paid and had a weekend off, KC here I come around Mar 85. I found a music shop in southeast side of town but I don't remember the name, its probably still there. I bought my 1st Fender, a six string acoustic; looked really good to me, all black and shiny w/ a nice case. It sounded ok, even though I didn't know how to play it. It occupied all my spare time, the acoustics in the latrine were exceptional. Must have been all the ceramic tile half walls in the shower section. I sold the guitar to a friend for $100 when I went overseas in 87', he played it well until a few years ago when he passed away.
Played a few other guitars off and on throughout my time in the military mostly acoustics and only owned a Takamine after that first Fender but played on 65 blackface's in the Army's MWR music centers a few times. I retired from the military in 06' and started fishing again and bought a gun. Then in 2010 I end up sick and struggle for a year or so before retiring from fishing, hobby-less and bored one night in 2012 I end up looking at guitars online. That night, I fell in love with an FSR American Special and a 65' Deluxe Reverb Re-Issue that fit my budget so I ordered online that night and promised myself that I would learn to play it before I run out of time on this blue marble. If nothing else it is my complete Fender history, at least for the time being . I have read The Soul of Tone and Stratocaster Chronicles the first 50 years and a few others and have been influenced by music all my life.

Old thread but what the hay, thought I'd add my short history.

In 2012, after decades of wanting to learn to play, my incredible wife decided this was something I needed to accomplish as I was entering semi-retirement. For our anniversary she bought me a new 2011 FSR Limited Edition American Vintage Stratocaster (1 of 46 produced):

Image

Later that year, I felt that a perfect combo was a Stratocaster and a Telecaster so I began to look for a good used one. A friend gave me a '99 MIM Nashville Telecaster in Arctic White in exchange for having helped him rebuild the engine in his '87 BMW 535is. It was bought new by his brother and heavily modded, removing the middle pup.

Image

My 1st Fender Amp was a '96 50th anniversary Princeton Chorus which I bought for $100 in near perfect shape

Image

A year later I found a very nice '67 Fender Deluxe blackface amp at a small rural Ma & Pa store

Image

An independent store going out of business got me my next Fender, a 2012 60th Anniversary Telebration Empress Telecaster about $650 less than the going rate.

Image

Then the unthinkable happened, my pride and joy, my 2012 FSR Limited Edition American Vintage Stratocaster's finish started lifting. With great assistance from Rob Schwartz and Austin Bingham at Fender, we started a warranty body replacement odyssey which took 18 mos. It got a hand-selected Custom Shop body (making it now 1 of 1) after Fender made 6 attempts at producing a good body (all were flawed). So Fender gave me a free 2013 American Deluxe Ash Stratocaster because I'd been w/o my Stratocaster for so long.

Image

In the meantime, a chance meeting at my dentist's office led me to my next Fender amp, a 1972 Fender Princeton Reverb (Silverface) in amazing one-owner condition.

Image

Then in Oct. of 2013, while in Columbus, OH for the President's Cup tournament, my surgeon Bro-in-Law and I were in a small music store just off the OSU campus. I played an amazing 2013 FSR Custom Telecaster (w/ active EMG pickups) w/ Mahogany set-neck and carved Mahogany body made in Indonesia. Turned out the owner of the shop had been saved from cancer a few years before by my bro-in-law, so in gratitude, he offered the Tele to me at his cost ! I didn't resist !!

Image

Then in early 2015, I stopped by an estate sale near my house and found a pair of one-owner Fender Vibro Champs, a 1965 (blackface) and a 1968 Drip-edge (silverface). I got the pair in a pkg. deal for $700.

Image

Image

Since then, I have restored my '99 Nashville Telecaster to it's original spec using all Fender Factory parts.

Image

So, that's my Fender History.

Two Stratocasters

Image

Three Telecasters

Image

And numerous Fender Amps, both modern and Vintage.

It doesn't go back as many years as most of you, but it's been a very interesting history nonetheless... So far...

cheers!

Haven't been playing guitar that long, but had wanted a Telecaster since I was 13!

After my girlfriend bought me an Epiphone Wildkat, I bought a Fender Mustang III amp which is what landed me in this forum.

Still want a tele'!

Had a really crappy Fender black body acoustic which I traded in for a much nice Ibanez acoustic (my travel and open mic guitar).
