I learned to play guitar on my dads 1957 Stratocaster. Sunburst with original case. I was familiar with this guitar from the mid 60's. My first personal Fender was a 1969 Precision natural color rosewood and tortoiseshell. very road worn. The next Fender was a bullet bass USA long scale model I had for a time. Sunburst. Next a 98 USA precision in Candy Apple red/rosewood and a Mexican Precision 89 I think in Wine red/rosewood. A Squire Jagmaster Japan model Sunburst and a white Squire affinity Strat for a short time. Rosewood both. I have had 2 teles, a Blackout 3 PU tele and a cream color one (maple board) these both Mexican made teles. Now I own a 2010 American Jazz Deluxe 5 string "Sunburst again" and a deluxe players strat Sunburst of course. I have and love a Les Paul too so it's not all about Fenders.

What's your Fender history?

My first guitar was a Fender F250 acoustic. It was an entry level acoustic made in Korea, but it must have been a "Wednesday" guitar, because she sounds great, plays wonderfully, looks nice...and I still own it.

But my personal Fender history (as far as electrics are concerned) started out with a different brand of guitar made by the fantabulous Mr. Leo...

My first three electrics were G&L guitars.

First was a G&L F-100 with a rosewood fingerboard, sunburst finish over a mahogany body, two coil- and phase-tapped humbuckers...a gorgeous guitar that I still own.

The second was a G&L SC-2; maple fingerboard, solid black finish (not sure what type of body wood)...the SC (SC-1, SC-2, SC-3) series was supposed to be a more reasonable "student" model, but they were really nice, well-made nice guitars. The only thing they were missing were the nicer appointments and finishes (although a friend of mine has a really killer-looking and killer-playing cherry red SC-3 that I would place right beside any Strat of the modern era, in terms of fit, finish, looks and sound). I never bonded with that SC-2 guitar, and I sold it during the great Mortgage Payment Guitar and Amp Collection Massacre of 1996.

My third non-Fender Fender guitar was a G&L Nighthawk. Black finished mahogany body, matching headstock, ebony fretboard (I think), and those killer Strat-sized MFD pickups. It, too was lost in the great Mortgage Payment Guitar and Amp Collection Massacre of 1996...it's the only guitar I've ever sold that I wish I had back...but they only made 400 of them, so I'm probably screwed.

Finally, I bought a true Fender; a 1964 Fender Mustang. Olympic White that had faded to creme yellow, tortoise pickguard, rosewood fretboard...original "snakeskin" case, set up perfectly...and I hated the feel of the guitar. I later found out about the different neck profiles of Fender axes, and this one had the little midget neck ("A" profile I think it's called?). I sold it to a Japanese guy with tiny hands...we were both happy with the transaction.

A cherry red 197? Fender Musicmaster Bass graced my collection for a few years...lost it in the great Mortgage Payment Guitar and Amp Collection Massacre of 1996 as well.

I bought my '62 US Vintage Stratocaster (precursor to the USA-made '62 reissue) in 1993. Fiesta Red finish, rosewood fretboard...gorgeous! I've modded it quite a bit, but it's still one of my special babies.

Final Fender that I have bought (thus far) is a MIM Tele Special that I have modded like crazy...it's probably one of my least-valuable Fenders, but it's almost always my go-to axe for everything...maple 'board, see-through vintage white (creamy blonde) finish...

I don't have time for the Fender amp history...maybe later.

I was a bass player who was having fun learning to play, in my first band on bass and I was unhappy that the basses all seemed so big and uncomfortable on my 5'6" frame.

My first bass was an Ibanez lawsuit Rickenbacher 4001 copy, which I had traded for a more conventionally designed Ibanez with active pickups. Both were reliable basses but just so BIG!

The epiphany was getting my first Fender, a 1978 Musicmaster bass which I still have. I still find it hard to believe that in those first days and all the music stores I went to looking for a lighter/smaller/more comfortable bass no one ever mentioned short scales. I had no idea they even existed until that Musicmaster came to me. This was the way of the world pre-internet, early 90's, word of mouth reigned supreme.

I've added another Squier Musicmaster, a Band of Gypsies strat, and a Montara acoustic to my Fender's since that first one as well.

My first decent guitar was a circa '62 Jazzmaster that I had
bought used for about $175 with HS case in '67. I ended up
trading that in towards a '68 Tele and '66 Deluxe Reverb. A
friend had offered me his '65? DuoSonic for my Silvertone Twin
Twelve piggyback. In '74 I traded it all for a new Cream Strat w/maple
and a Dual Showman. That Strat was with me on the road for 30 years and
although I picked up other guitars and gear on the road, that was
the one that saw more gigs than any of my others. These days I
switch between guitars and amps depending on the gig/acoustics,
but those early Fenders were a joy to play and left me with some
of my best memories ever.

First, a Strat. Then I parted that out to friends who needed it, then a Tele and another Strat.

I bought my first Fender-a'65 Strat-in 1974,the next year I bought a '65 Mustang and the next year a '65 Jaguar. My next Fender was bought in 1979,it was a '78 L/H Strat that I strung for right to set the vibe right for when we did Hendrix sets.I now have 8 Fenders and of course I'm not near finished yet. I'd love to have a 70s Starcaster, a Coronado and a Fender XII.Before I leave this mortal coil I'd love to have a CS Strat that's a faithful rendition of an L-series Strat (62-'65) or one like George Harrison's Rocky.

i don't have a long and storied history

- Squire hello kitty guitar (put in some seymour duncan invaders so she is an angry kitty) i played guitar a little when i was a kid then gave it up when i went to college. Then started playing again after many years. started with the HK squire when i got back into it. I know it is not a "true fender" but i think it still counts.

- Picked up a beautiful Fender Jaguar Special HH. this is my favorite guitar both in terms of looks and how is plays/sounds. I hope that i am buried with this guitar after many MANY years of playing.

- While in Korea i bought a Fender Limited Edition '65 Deluxe Reverb 22W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp with the help of a very kind musicianfriend supervisor that took great care of me. i have yet to plug into that amp as i am still abroad (18 more days until i am back in sunny florida but who's counting HA HA). I have been dying to play on this amp since it got delivered to my house many months ago... it is really my first real tube amp. I think my Jag is gonna scream with this amp for sure.

1st Fender guitar in 1968 was a Telecaster, blonde on blonde probably a 58 model that looked similar to this:Image stolen by my best friend at the time.
2nd Fender guitar in 1969 was a Telecaster bass, blonde:Image sold in 1991.
3rd and 4th are these 2, a Fender Precision bass Squier model red and a Squier by Fender Precision bass black:Image
I have a 5th Precision bass, arctic white with a broken neck that I haven't a photo of. If ever I replace the neck I'll post a photo.

You must be into that real vintage stuff. You have a guitar that's over 1,000 years old?

Derek, thanks Bro. I bought them together in March of 69, I miss that bass guitar and amp very much, lol. I don't think Marshall makes those 4/12" bass cabinets anymore.

Hmm, back when I had a classical and a LP copy, a guitar playing friend & I used to debate which was better--Gibson or Fender--it was partly in fun, but he always said Fender & I said Gibson
So when we had saved up for good guitars, he bought a Les Paul Custom and I got an Ibanez Iceman (which is closer to a Gibson than a Fender.)

However, just over a year later I got a Mustang, so thus began my "Fender History" While searching for the guitar that eventually was the Iceman, I came across an old used Mustang, and loved it--but I couldn't afford it. I liked it better than the Strats I'd tried--not for the short scale, I just loved the guitar. So when another store later had a pair of Mustangs I was interested, but the price was still too high--I had just bought an Iceman the previous year, and I didn't have a job.

So when I got a job after my first pay day I went to that store intending to buy a Boss Phaser, but I took a look around and saw the Mustangs were now on sale (They were moving to a new location and most stuff was on sale) so instead of the Phaser I put a down payment on one of the Mustangs on layaway. (I had just started working--I needed a little more time, but it didn't take log to pay for it. And now I had a Mustang--my Fender defending friend had no Fenders, but two Les Pauls. (He later bought a P Bass, so he did have a Fender eventually)

So thus was I a Fender owner--now years later I am looking for a small practice amp as that fit my needs at home, and while I tried various brands, the Fenders were my favorites, and while a lot of people look down on them, I got a G-Dec Jr--it was just what I needed--it was small, light, not too expensive, had several sounds I could use, had backing tracks for fun, and was more than loud enough for playing at home.

I've owned many Strats since starting to play in the '60s,my favorite was a Sonic blue '65,that I would like to buy back from the present owner but we can't reach an agreement.
I played a Gibson Les Paul Custom through Marshall and Mesa Boogie amps in the mid '70s to late '87 when I bought a black '87 American Standard Strat with a maple neck, from there it's been Fender all the way, with 6 or 7 more Strats, present favorites are the Reissues,a '59,'62 and '62 Hot Rod,along with many vintage Blackface and Brownface Fenders, pre '68 amps.
I love the Fender sound!
