Hey Guys, I'm looking for a small size amp that I could easily carry around with me mainly between school dorm and my house, or sometimes other places. It's mostly going to be use for practice only, so I'm not going to need a loud volume, but I'm looking for an amp as small as possible, would be great if it's light, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, with decent sound quality, and also include distortion effect. I'm not so sure where does the small size amps range in price, but I can tell you I'm kind of on a limited budget (no worries, just give me the amp name and price, I'll do the math and figure out which one works best for me). I mean, the amp doesn't need to be awesome, it's just for practicing in a small room.

BTW, it's for my Fender 57 Reissue Stratocaster Made In Japan Since 1993.

Style of music I like to play: Blues, Jazz, Funk, Rock
Some examples of the tone I'm looking for would be:

John Mayer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWv3cZOBgpM&feature=related
Jimi Hendrix
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bz85o1paFMQ
Funk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIqEDjabG-g&feature=related
And sometimes I would play rock songs like this too
(so I prefer there's distortion effect along with the amp)

Blackstar HT1, Fender Mustang I or II or the new Pawnshop Greta, Marshall MG10 or 15 or Class 5, Orange Crush PiX, Roland Cube, Vox AC4. There are loads out there, it depends on your budget and what you want.

Personally I use a Blackstar HT5 Combo for practice and it's a $@!&#*.

An original Peavey Envoy 110 from the mid 80s. It can do anything if you play with the settings. It's also got a push/pull for 2 separate gains and really good reverb.

I'd strongly recomend the Orange Micro Crush, here's a video on YouTube where the guy is just plugged directly into the amp.

And here's a vide of some professionals using a couple of them: Chocolate Genius Inc - Polanski.

In this one you can see the amp on the floor (and see him using the built in tuner at the beginning): Chocolate Genius Inc - Enough For You.

And it is very affordable.

I hope you find what you're looking for.

Fender Frontman 25R , goes for $99.99 brand new and is IMO, one of the best sounding Solid State practice combos ever. 25 watts of Fender power which is also good enough for small gigs as well.

I considered one in the limited red tolex.

What about the Fender Mustang, I have a mark II version, great amp but aswell as the mark I, i noticed Fender also do a mustang mini, that has some effects built in, if size and lightness is an issue.

Have fun going to the music store and trying them all out :D

Check out the Vox Pathfinder 15R,although it's solid state it sounds amazingly tubelike. the amp has a great reverb unit and its tremolo effect is just great too.You can overdrive it to get a really good distortion that sounds almost tubelike. For around $125 it's well worth the money as it's pretty loud and very lightweight for carrying.Vox and Marshall both make great little S.S. amps for under and just above $200.

For a small, all in one amp try looking at the following:

Fender Gdec 15
Fender Mustang I or II
Fender Super Champ X2
Line 6 Spyder 15
Vox Valvetronic VT 20
Marshall MG 15

For even smaller amps:
any of the vox amPlugs
or if you have a Iphone something like Amplug or Ampkit

You can go to Youtube or any on-line musician dealer webpage to look up specifics.

The Marsh Tweed Deluxe is an exact replica of one of the smokin'est little amps to have ever existed on the planet. No channel switching here. There's also the Victora 2012.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Thanks to everyone for all these great suggestions! Really appreciate it. At the moment, I'm sort of leaning towards Roland Micro-Cube (http://www.roland.com/products/en/Micro-CUBE/), because: It seems like it's got all the tones I wanted ; I love that it has the function to play with a headphone it's definitely going to be very useful when I'm in the school dorm ; It's the size I'm looking for, not too big not too small, easy to carry around.

QUESTION:
Looking at the price of this amp on amazon, it seems reasonable for my budget. A bit much, so I was thinking on buying used. Question is:
1) Is there any disadvantage in buying used amp other than it may got some scratches? I mean, is the sound quality not going to be as good as new or pretty much the same?
2) I've never bought a thing off Amazon, I was wondering, is it safe and cheaper if I buy this amp either used/new from Amazon.com, and have it ship to my place (Bangkok)?

I was doing some research on google and just came across this, this is amazing, how about just simply getting an iRig and plug it with my Ipod touch and play my electric guitar with headphones on. This iRig would absolutely fits my requirement. I could just put my Ipod touch in my pocket instead of holding on to an amp and start playing my electric guitar anywhere with iRig. And with my Ipod touch's headphones on so I don't have to worry on disturbing my school dorm's roommate at all. I could go as loud as I want in my own guitar world LOL. Now that there's iRig, and it's so much cheaper than buying an actual amp, (this way I don't have to worry about my limited budget), in this case I wouldn't care too much about the sound quality as long it works, after all it's for practice only anyways. cheers : )

Has anyone ever you iRig before?
My only concern is, using iRig to play electric guitar with headphone on my Ipod touch, is the battery of my Ipod touch going to run dead fast and I don't really get to practice much? LOL : (
