I'm thinking about buying a new strat. I play a lot of power chords. The question I have is this. Does having a humbucker in the bridge position instead of a single coil really give you that much more punch for heavy rock music? My birthday's coming up in a couple months and my wife says she's going to get me a new guitar (yeah right, it'll never happen but I humor her  ). I'm trying to decide if I want a fat strat or just a players strat. :?:

I'd say it depends what kind of punch you looking for. But what the hell do I know?

yeah, if you're playing things along the lines of power chords i would go for an HSS to give you a bit more versatility in case you ever need the buckers for the extra punch

That's what I was thinking, but wasn't sure if it really made that much of a difference. :)

it will give you somewhat of a different tone... go to a guitar shop if you get the chance and see if the difference is one that you feel you will use.. i think so, but its up to you in the end

Yeah...I've been meaning to get to a guitar shop soon, but it's not easy since I work constantly (6 days a week). What really sucks is that I live more than 50 miles from the nearest reputable guitar shop. :(

I've never cared much for a HB in the bridge position of a Strat, it seemed much louder and out of place to me over the other pickups. A HB in the neck position of a Tele-well, that's a different story. Especially since I have mine installed with a 5 way switch and can select bridge only, series, parallel, split coil or full HB!

yes, for playing power chords with overdrive, bridge humbucker stands out better than bridge single coil. Suggest you get a HSS strat for best of both worlds.

Most of Eddie's sound is in his fingers, and actually--most of yours is too.

As for the question--Since I have guitars with humbuckers, if I bought a Strat, I'd probably get single coils all around--but if you want the Strat to be your main guitar---then try a humbucker in the bridge position, but make sure it's wired to also split the coils. That way you'll have both.

I went from a MiM SSS to a AmD HSS, after fooling with it in the store for a while.

For me I liked the sound combinations available with it and the S1 switching, others don't . All depends what sounds right to you.

Get a nice grittish sound from the bucker, pass it into a TS-9 and drive your favorite tubes into overload. :) :) :) Get yelled at by the wife.....

If I were setting up another SSS I would go for the Lace Alumitones again.

Thanks for all the input guys...I finally made it over to guitar center the other day and I think I've decided to get a Highway One HSS Strat. I played a Jaguar HH too. That was a pretty cool guitar. I like the Jag body and I'm used to the switches cause I play a Jaguar now. What do you guys think about the Jag HH. Just wondering :) I also played a Classic Series '72 Telecaster with the twin humbuckers...that was a pretty nice guitar too.
