I have done that too. I like 9's. Also have been playing 10's on my Jazzmaster which I will be going back to 9's on shortly also.

Doing finger pushup's on bends is just too hard now days.

Was it the extra tension you didn't like? Your guitar may have needed a slight bit of tweaking to bring the setup back withing spec. Although there will naturally be an increase in tension going from 9's to 10's, if the guitar is set up for the string gauge, it helps a bunch. Other than that, the only thing I don't like about using 10's or larger strings on my mustang is that the strings are bigger than the thin, short vintage fret wire and it feels different fretting on them. Kinda stiff.....abrupt...harsh? Hard to explain, it is just a "feel" thing to me (I'm not talking about string tension).

Hey Earnest.... it's your old buddy Vern....

Wasn't it Stevie Ray Vaughn that played 13's (or was it 14's) ?

I use .008-.038s on my old '65 Mustang and they do the job beautifully, and the lightness of the strings doesn't compromise the tone one bit.

I'd advise against tuning down on a stock Mustang; the bridge WILL NOT let tuned down strings stay even remotely in tune. Even getting it into D and tuning it is an absolute pain in the arse.

I just replaced the strings on my ES-137 with the same strings it had before -- these --
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Gibson-SEG- ... 1122881.gc

At first I was like damn, these strings are much harder to play than the previous set of strings... They must have changed the L5 strings... but that is not the case... your strings will stretch a bit and feel softer after you break them in...

keep the 10's for at least a month or two.. break them in... I think you'll be good with them...

One more thing... I have tried two different brands of "pure nickel" strings, Gibson and D'Addario.... I strongly believe that "pure nickel" strings are softer and require less tension than strings that are not "pure nickel", so that they are easier to play....

here are the "pure nickel" strings I really like:

Earnest, you have a twin brother out there named Gossamer.

Similar syntax on your postings, similar instruments, similar musical tastes and passions/rants, similar complaints that you're a "weakling" and it's hard to play heavier strings (Gossamer complained that his Strat was a "man's guitar" and was harder to play than his Mustang), skmilar habit of changing user names (c'mon, did you not think we would notice two new users named "Earnest" and "The Importance of Being Earnest" within a few days of one another?), similar complaints about how "long-term highly regarded Forumites" all stick together...

Did you get rid of your Billy Corgan Strat or are you just calling it an American Strat so we wouldn't guess who you are?

So, are you somebody's doppelgänger or should we say, "Welcome back (again) Gossamer?"

From the "Nothing Remotely Resembling Music Here" thread:

And another thing: I am so completely 100% sick of seeing Rhianna EVERYWHERE!!!! So I go to check out this music site on the recommendation of a friend, and this is what I see:

Arrrgggfhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go away Rhianna!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rhianna is the textbook definition of why the years 1991-1997 were much better than the years 2008-present in *popular* music. What I mean by that is what is crammed down the throats of kids who know nothing other than FM radio and TV. I happen to think there is plenty of great guitar-based rock music today, perhaps more than ever--it's just not "popular" music anymore. The corporate powers that be make a few rare exceptions such as for Foo Fighters, but anyway.... (I would also clarify that I don't think Foo Fighters is very good, at all, even though Dave was great as Nirvana's drummer.)

This is almost verbatim to some of Gossamer's opinions and rants.

So, you haven't denied it: is it true?

Armadillo...

Yeah something fishy about the posts when someone says "I didn't put my strings on correctly"

Kind of like saying, "I put my pants on backwards" ...

What can I say? I suck at re-stringing.

I do not deny that Earnest is the same guy as The Importance of Not Being Earnest. I got tired of typing the long version every time I log in. Since I'm doing this from work, I have it set to never remember anything.

The important thing, however, is that it's important to not be earnest. It lowers blood pressure and increases laughter.

"The Court Jester" is more to type than "Earnest", so what's up with that?

Also, you didn't answer the question about your identity as it relates to Gossamer.

I guess my ultimate question is, "Why all the name changes? What are you hiding?"

My suggestion would be for you to choose the user name "Sybil"; that should cover at least 16 personalities, according to the book written by Cornelia B. Wilbur.

Hmm, seems that all of Earnest, or whatever posts have disappeared, making it look like I started the thread - most odd.... :?

Maybe he should have have been a bit more Earnest?

He has done this multiple times, joining the Forum, making a splash, then erasing all his posts, disappearing and reappearing later under a new name.

Cobain/Corgan/Mascis fan that cannot tolerate anybody who doesn't unequivocally love those artists....
