Hi All!
Its been a while! I hope everyone is having a great start to their year! I need some help with some PUP advice please :) . My wonderful wife bought me a pristine 88 US Strat for Chrissy!! Great solid guitar, I love it!! You all love picc's so here tis....
Image

My problem is i tried setting it all up and thought i'd done a bad job because the Pup's were just bitey and white noisey out of phase in a bad way to my ear :? I now get how people coax metal out of 80's strat's.. .... Then i thought the modern bridge with more tension and 4 springs were resonating frequency's wrongly so i took one out, in the end i took it to the local fender guy and he told me these late 80's Pups can be hard to coax that creamy warm blues tone out of. He set it up and whilst he has position 2 and 4 sounding nice in there quacky way i don't have that golden bluesey neck Pup where you can have creamy soft to hot neck pup sound. I hope i am making sense.. I cant live with it as i want it to be a main play out guitar.. HELP!! I don't have massive guitar stores like you all over there where i can go sit in a room with a range of guitars to sort this by myself so i rely on the good folk here for my "Modding" :D We all like that word.. advice. I have on Arjay's advice kitted a 85 MIJ with FAT 50's and they are gorgous, They have the complete package, Soft creamy tones to bitier 70's rock n roll just how i like it. 8) I have Texas specials in a SRV which are just perfect tonal range for me also so i am contemplating a set of them so i have a play out guitar with TS's cause the SRV just aint the guitar to take out to play. But what are my other options? Do CS 69's have the range or are they limited to thinner sounds as people say they are? 57-62's CS's? Do i get bold and dare a say try something non fender? I dont like the idea? Please all your help will be greatly apreaciated......THIS IS NOT conversation for the sake of conversation.....This is what i will base my 2 nd play out guitar on..... Can anyone tell me how to make this guitar 3/4 as good as my 85 MIJ with fat 50's?? Please think creamy soft to hot tearing blues!!! 8)

Thank you in advance!!!

If you want something a little different (but still bluesy and Stratty), you might check out Pete Biloft Vintage Vibe pickups. I have a set of his SP90 pickups in my Strat, and they're fat, rich, warm and round while retaining the Stratocaster sparkle and spank...reasonably priced, well built, and great customer service before and after the sale.

Ordered me a set of Don Mare's handwound Formvar 50s pickups after doing much research and hearing nothing but great things about his work. You can call or email him directly and tell him what you're looking for and he'll walk you through your options. Super nice guy and very knowledgeable. The pickups are a bit pricey at $239 (USD) but I won the football pool at work and had money to burn so I figured why not go for the best. Should be getting them the week after next. Will post how they sound once I get them.

The SP90 set are P-90 pips shrunk down to fit into a normal Strat-sized body routing. You really get the best of both worlds--the girth and fatness of a P-90, the spank and sparkle of a Strat.

They're like a richer/warmer sounding Texas Special with a slight dose of top end sparkle sprinkled on top. Even the bridge pup sounds rich and fat--not spiky/ice-picky at all.

The other thing that stood out was how the pups were built. They were heavy--literally, they weighed significantly more than the stock pups in my USA '62 reissue. Very well-shielded (no significant noise, they're quieter than the average single coil), heavy copper foil on the shielding, cloth-covered wires, adjustable pole pieces... 8)

On top of the great sound and construction, Pete is great to talk to. He gave me some advice on another guitar I was modding, and I hadn't even bought pups from him for that project!

I recommend his products whole-heartedly...
