Alright, so my buddy was given a 1962 Fender Esquire. we checked the number and everything and it is from 1962. Anyway, he doesn't play guitar and he wants to sell it. what is a good price?

The condition is very good. 8.5-9/10 seems to be a blonde color. maple neck (?) and rosewood fret board. with zero rust. all original parts.

guitar center (lame, I know) offered him 8.5K, but they have one for sale (that even they admit is in way worse condition) for 16K.

I have seen them on ebay for around 8k to 22K, but I don't know much about these and I haven't looked around much.

one thing I thought was cool, is it still has the original little metal thing that covers the bridge/pickup. most the ones I see don't have it and they are very rusted...

I'd hold onto it until I got the highest offer possible (if I were to get something like this and looking to sell, otherwise I'd keep it)

I agree with that! I would love to keep it, but it is up to him and he doesn't play guitar. I play guitar and if I had the money, I would buy it haha. It is an awesome guitar :)

I just dont want him to get screwed and I am trying to find a good price range for him to sell it in.

According to the Vintage Guitar Price Guide the Esquire's value would be between $9,000 and $14,000 depending on condition and whether or not it had a slab or or curved fretboard.Certain custom colours on Esquires of this vintage can bring your value up tp $35,000.

$8500 is fair if the guitar is a blond and in ok condition. I would be looking at offers around $10,000 and see what you can get.

If the guitar is a custom color, then it could be worth much more.

If it is all original it should be an easy sale, but the market is down for these items.

yeah! it is blonde and in very good condition! :)

definitely all original! guy bought it when he was in school, played it a little and then left it alone. who knows how old the strings are... or if they were ever even changed.. haha.

You should ask him if you can slowly pay it off with money and services. If you like it, try to keep it.

My local GC has a vintage Esquire which I believe (haven't held it or been close to it as it hangs clear up by the ceiling) is also a '62. They have had it for about three months now, asking $32,000.

But, gee whiz, no takers.....

Basically it is worth what anyone is willing to pay. If it is in such good shape, I'd say 15,000 USD is not out of the question at all in a private sale. GC was going to mark it about 17K then negotiate to about 16 maybe.

The vintage market is depressed right now. Keep it for about a year. I don't think it will ever be worse LESS than it is right now. The market has rebounded some in activity but still prices remain sluggish to rise. Pre-CBS stuff is always hot though, so if he wants to sell he can do so pretty quickly but the longer he can wait the more valuable it will be. Blonde is the most common finish or it would be worth more. I'm assuming it has original case, etc.

The best way to find out what something is worth is take it to GC and whatever they offer, double that figure as your "asking" price, then negotiate down 10% with a serious cash waving buyer.

Putting a truly collector class pre-CBS instrument on eBay can be a slippery $@!&#. If you don't have the contacts to do a private party sale yourself, you can go the consignment route with a respected vintage dealer like George Gruhn in Nashville or Elderly Instruments in Lansing, Michigan. A consignment dealer will almost always get a higher sale price than you can, but of course the dealer takes a commission when it does sell. Even with the commission deduction you will in all likelyhood come out to the good over a private party or eBay sale by going the consignment route on a pre-CBS collector class instrument. Remember eBay charges a pretty healthy commission too!

Buyers are wary of instruments on eBay and pre-CBS ones tend to not bring as much as they would if they were being sold by a reputable vintage dealer who vouches for their originality and authenticity. At the least you should get a thorough written appraisal from such a reputable authority, which you then can show to potential buyers to prove originality and authenticity. Good luck with your sale!
