Yeah i feel dumb. i can't do bar chords. I've tried to move my thumb to the underside of the neck for better dexterity, like my teacher told me to do, but i'm still having trouble making the chords sound right. especially when i have to put my finger across the whole fret, and put other fingers on two or three other strings. Any tips?

Just remember, your index finger may lay across an entire fret length but it doesn't necessarily have to have pressure applied across all six strings

Heres an example.

If you're doing, say, an Amin shape barre:

Code:
E--3--
B--4--
G--5--
D--5--
A--3--
E-----

(Cmin in this case)

Because you're using your third/fourth/pinky fingers to fret the B G and D strings your index finger 'only' has to worry about the A and E strings.

When I was a teenager and took lessons, barre chords scared the living daylights outta me!! So much so, that I actually gave up playing for a long time. Now I'm older and back to teaching myself. The first thing I want to get over is the barre chord. Now that I'm older, they don't seem as bad as I thought.

practice practice....and more PRACTICE!!!! They really stink at first....then after u get them they're not so bad....the sad thing is that it just so happens that the stuff that's harder are usually the things that we don't love to practice!! lol but just work on it! you will get it sooner or later, and then you will be glad you spent the time on it!!!!

Can I chime in for a little advice on this too?

I can barre ok on most chords UNTIL the 12th fret. Then it all breaks down and I get a lot of PFLHTFT when it's supposed to be F7. I just cannot find a trick to get my index finger to turn/flex and cover that six string real estate (especially on chords with the root on the sixth string).

Any advice on this? I'm just learning some leads too, and practicing scales above that dredded 12th fret is causing me grief too (it's getting to be a mental thing). My hands are VERY small, so that adds to the equation here.

I'm playing a Strat, and just love the tone; BUT, interestingly, I was in a Guitar Center messing with a Tele (and I don't really love that tone), and it seemed easier to handle above the 12th fret.

Does any of this make sense, or is it Memorex? Thanks for your time and advice!

Bob

Just keep at it. Barre chords are the guitar player's version ofthe toddler learning to walk.
