Anyone watch the episode last night where Les Pauls wife's nephew brought in Les Pauls personal 61 SG with lots of documentation and pics. He wanted $250k for it when he went in and sold it for $90,000. I feel they ripped him off. He should have went and auctioned it off at one of those big New York auctions or something.... What do you think?

Yeah, it is a show but that's also the nature of pawn shops. They'll lowball their buy offer to maximize their profit when selling.

I really like watching American Pickers better but they are basically doing the same thing, pay a price they know they can profit on.

They stuff they are buying is real. But when they buy it is staged. What happens is, someone comes in with something or they call ahead because that place is always packed now. If the producers think it would look good on TV they clear almost everyone out of the shop have the experts on stand by and start filming. All of that witty banter between Rick Cory Chum and the old man is real. That stuff had always happened.

As for the price of $90k US? I'm thinking it is a fair offer. Remember they are going to resale it. Also this was only Marry's guitar not one that belong to Les. While she was a damn good player people want Les Paul's stuff. The price on these types of guitars have dropped a ton over the last 10 years. The first few Clapton sales made huge money. The last one? Clapton's personal Blackie relic sold for retail. Clapton used twins sold for less than retail. The money is just not there any more. Though I do think had he sold it at Christies or a private collector he could have picked up another $60k to $70k.

My boy just visited the famous Pawn Shop. He told me, Like someone said earlier. You cant get near the place in the day time. They had to go back in the middle of the night, and it was still crowded. No Fat Boys/Old Man, just a bunch of employees and customers/tourists.
Getting back to the guitar. I know it was his, but that was a family keepsake and he should have had his A#@ kicked for selling it. Oh well it's none of my business. There is a lesson to be learned here. When its time to go make sure your stuff gose to the right person. 8)

I'd put the damn thing in a museum. I wouldn't want some rich yuppie to use it in private, it should be looked at, at least.

I don't think the show is real at all. What are the chances of darn near every "pawn shop jackpot prize" showing up? I just know they're saving the very last show for the "Action Comics #1(Superman). Dunno, maybe a Beatles Butcher Cover....

Seriously, the Mickey Mouse Phones...50's Coca Cola Machine...'66 Schwinn...KISS Pinball Machine...Shelby Cobra...top dollar Vegas Chip...1901 Edison Phono.....

How they got the show in the first place was all of the cool stuff. Being in Vegas they $@! all of that kind of stuff since people are looking for money in Vegas. Also now it is the you can't make money with out spending money thing. Now that everyone knows that they have this stuff, they bring the odd stuff in.

The documents indictaed that Les had purchased it, but
further showed that it was Mary (Ford's) stage guitar. It
still had the scotch tape where she'd tape the setlists and
the input jack was probably reworked by Les himself, not sure
about the re-fret and where were the original pup covers?

People don,t walk in the shop with this stuff. They search the country and get people to bring in stuff. Its all staged and im sure the deal is already set up before being filmed. Its BS but interesting.

It was a historically significant guitar. So $90K is a good price, could the guy have gotten more at auction, probably, but then he wouldn't have had the chance to "Sell" it on a National TV show.

I agree he should have been kicked in the nads for selling a family hierloom, but it was his guitar so he can do with it as he pleased, which is exactly what he did. In this case our opinions don't mean much one way or another.

90k for an SG is a great price in this day and age. I would have taken it.

I get annoyed watching that show when they bring in experts who don't know what the $@!& they are talking about or "trick out" something unnecessarily.

A couple of examples was someone who brought in Amazing Fantasy #15 and their "expert" described it as a spinoff of Fantastic Four.

But what really got under my skin was when someone was selling a run of the mill AR-15 with a 14" barrell and referring to it as an M4. No, an M4 is a piece of military gear that is illegal to own without a class 3. And then to make it sellable they added a picatinny system, trijicon, flashlight and forward assist with the wrong kind of aperture for the optics. You can't just slap all of that $@!& on a weapon and call it good. You made a gun that would appeal to idiots who spend all day playing Call of Duty and have no idea how to sight in a rifle.
