When you're buying, say a guitar from a web site, do you have to pay tax on top of the guitars actual price, or is the price shown on the site all you have to pay (exc. delivery)?

...I just wanted to compare the American tax rates to the ones in Ireland if I were buying from the States.

Thanks.

I bought a Fender Malibu SCE from instrumentpro.com last year and there was no tax, unless you live in California, and no shipping. Plus I received a bunch of freebies. I was very satisfied. bb

I think you only pay tax if the store or warehouse is in the same state that you are.

Generally you pay taxes if the seller has an outlet in your state. For example if I buy online from GC I pay taxes since there's a GC in Texas (4 of them w/in 20 miles of where i live in fact). However, if I buy online from a small single outlet out of state shop, I don't pay taxes.

The way online sales are taxed in the united states is supposed to change sometime in the near future.

Ok, thanks for the replies guys!....It's just that if I buy something from the States, I'll have to pay 24.7 % tax (Irish tax...in customs duty) and I was wondering if there is a way of getting around that or if I'm actually paying tax for two countries. Even with the tax I'll still be saving money. Still though, a quarter of a products retail price is a lot to pay in taxes.

..I guess the only way to evade that tax is to bring stuff over from the States and say it was a present.

Sometimes you can avoid customs fees and dutys if you claim the item as a gift, or if the sender claims its a gift. I think you could probably do this every now and then without looking suspicious....

Yeah, but sadly, most shops refuse to put the item down as a gift when they're sending it over, because if the item gets damaged, and I sue the shop, they're in trouble for fraud or something along those lines.

I don't know too much about shipping, customs, taxes and stuff like that for buying things out of the country. But here's an idea if it makes sense to ya. If you know somebody in the states you could let them buy it, then pay them for it and let'em ship it to you.
